My operation went really smoothly, despite having to get up to be at the hospital for 6am and barely sleeping at all cause I had that whole night before jitters and felt the need to clean the home as much as possible beforehand (I stopped myself from moving around all our wall art at 4am, that was the line). The hospital staff were friendly and helpful and I didn’t have to wait very long (just long enough to read the new Hellboy:BPRD I’d picked up) before being ushered off to surgery. I had a brief moment of jitters when they put on the gas mask and told me to relax and breathe deeply but then the drugs kicked in and the last thing I remember is saying that they must be working cause the ceiling started wobbling. I woke up later feeling pretty good, they gave me drugs for the pain n nausea and I napped rather comfortably and contentedly, in no rush to leave since it was quiet and restful there. Eventually I started feeling like I wanted to be in my own bed so they called Matthew who had kindly volunteered to take my dopey babbling self home and make sure I was ok until the family got home. All in all it went well, and though I can clearly feel the 4 holes they made in me (the one in my bellybutton hurts the most), and the place where my gallbladder once was, the T3s I’ve been given seem to be working well and have left me for the time being in a rather pleasant ‘my world is a lovely place’ mood.
Since hospitals and toddlers are a terribly combination, Joel took Sophie to Centerville on the islands for the day with Julia and Jared (poor Steve was at work, we will have to take him out picnicking some other time) and they had much fun running amok. I took Sophie on Wednesday for her first time this summer and I got her a seasons pass for all the rides now that she’s big enough to go on a bunch of them. The miniboats, motorcars and firetrucks were a hit, the flying bumble bees she was really keen on until I went to put her in the ride and then she changed her mind. She kept eyeing the rollercoaster suspiciously, and I had to DRAG her away from the bumper cars which she is way to small to go on. The pony rides were closed but I imagine she’ll love that too next time we go. The train that goes around the park is always a big hit and she’s very good to sit while the ride is going. Her absolute favorite though was the carousel, we went on it at least 8 times in a row! We started with the stationary horses and after each ride she’d get down and pick out a new horse. After a few rounds she decided to try one of the moving horses which was ok for at least one round, then halfway through the next one she changed her mind and decided to stick with the stationary ones. The carousel gets some good speed on it, so while she was all “Wiiiiiii!” and “Yeeehaaw!” I was all OMGZ I’m so dizzy - which Joel also got to share in when they went yesterday. I didn’t bring any snack for the farm animals but Joel planned ahead and so Sophie got to feed carrots and apples to the critters and got to pet the retired RCMP horses. She of course loves horses from our monthly trips to Ottawa where she gets to go to the ranch to see Auntie Chrissy ride, reinforcing that whole girls love horses stereotype, which isn’t really a bad thing until they want mom and dad to buy them one ;)
The hardest part about this operation, and the reason I’ve put it off is that I’m going to have to keep Sophie at arms length while I’m healing up. Amusingly the gallstone pain that sent me to emergency was how I found out I was pregnant to begin with, but that meant that I wanted to wait until after the pregnancy and well after nursing before I let them burrow some tubes into me because I wanted to be able to enjoy all that mommy & baby cuddling time while she was wee. I did get to cuddle with her a bit last night before bed, she was so wiped from her day on the island that she was just a bundle of snugglepuppy. I still have to be careful though since oftentimes our play involves jumping up n down on the mommy belly or various parent tots acrobatics, but hopefully we’ll be able to keep her distracted during my recovery so that I can be up and roughhousing with her again in a few weeks time. But for now, the holes in me are calling the T3’s so I am off to rose-coloured glasses land while the family heads off to frolic at the zoo (lucky ducks).
