I decided last week to give Bones a try, since I know a bunch of people who love it and, you know, it seemed up my alley what with the crime-solving and the UST! OMG THE THING WITH BRENNAN'S DAD. I was so confused, because towards the end there, they seemed to be implying he DIDN'T kill that dude, even though we saw it was him in one of the flashbacks. Then again, we also saw a flashback each starring Russ and Brennan, and I don't remember if we actually saw their dad's face in the actual episode it happened. But Booth and Brennan both clearly believed he had done it! But then maybe not! There was no evidence! But at first they were saying he did it! But suddenly he was denying killing FBI guy! But who the fuck else could have done it! Etc.

At this point I really can't tell anymore what the show was actually trying to say on the issue of his guilt or innocence, but, yes, Brennan managing to get him off scot free at the last second really, really bothered me, because not only did I find it wildly out of character (I don't think she ever truly stopped believing he was guilty, so she went against her better judgment) but the show really did appear to be saying, it's okay if your daddy murdered someone, as long he did it to protect you! Which, um, no. This is a show about how murder is never justified, and how taking someone else's life is an awful, presumptuous, unacceptable thing, and I think they should have stuck by that principle.
