I then stated, "Well, sir, I have a real problem trying to imagine Pope
John Paul commanding all Catholics to kill those of your faith or Dr.
Stanley ordering Protestants to do the same in order to go to Heaven!"

In the year 1095, people were shocked in Western Europe by the words of Pope Urban II, "The Muslims have conquered Jerusalem". Pope Urban wanted the Christians to retake Jerusalem from the Muslims. People shouted "God wills it". All over France these were the warring words of the Christians.

While this article you've posted up has it's roots... the main thing to see here is what's going on is nothing new... extremest are of every faith and culture. Just as there are muslims today who believe in Jihad and believe that it is the will of Allah to convert or kill all who do conform to their "ideals" of Islamic law and culture there were those over 1000 years ago... riding hard into the muslim lands in armor with swords, slaughtering all who would not convert to christianity and taking what they will... When confronted with the fact that these are acts of death and violence their excuse and rally cry was "God Wills It"

How different is this from the Muslim "Allu Ackbar!" (God is Great)

The Pope HAS said "To kill an Infidel is not murder, it is the path to heaven" - Not any recent pope mind you... but none the less we cannot stand high-and-mighty and say we are above such behavoir.

Much of the muslim jihad hate speach we hear today is simply a repeat of what we said when we invaided their lands. We have not outgrown this... just listen to the Conservative right talk about the attack on their moral values... from Abortion to Gay Marriage and everything in between... if you don't agree to their moral values, which on the surface are ultra-conservative christian values (I say on the surface because it seems so many of their leaders etc find themselves in scandals where they strayed from the "straight and narrow")

Joe pretty much said it but to put it in more religious philosophy

Hatred Begets Hatred, Blood begets Blood

This chain is as old as religions themselves
