Veronique Branquinho Collection Spring/Summer 2001

The atmosphere of Malcolm McLaren’s “Madame Butterfly” video clip is a strong reference for this collection.
The women in this video are almost naked and fragile but also unapproachable at the same time.

This duality returns in the opposition between light and skin coloured fabrics and tight masculine tailored suits with sharp cut shirts.

Skirts and trousers have laser cut detailing on the hips, which refers to flowing ballet skirts. The laser cutting makes the same movement as a draped ballet skirt, but in a rougher way.

This tension between fragile ballet and rough dark force is something you can also feel in the loaded suspense of Dario Argento’s film “Susperia” (1976).

Moving knitted skirts, knitted tops with plaited front, silk dresses with butterfly sleeves are shown in contrast with black on black jacquard fabrics, sharp cut sleeveless blazers and long black cotton coats.

Skin colour, light pearl grey and black are the colours of this collection.
The delicate skin and pearl grey silhouettes are presented with black tights and shoes; the black clothes with white shoes emanate again the duality between light and dark.

The hair is combed backwards with gel, which introduces a masculine element; make-up is very fragile with gloss on lips and cheekbones.

The teeth are painted black to make the models inaccessible and complex to understand.
