Halloween Story

“Hey, that’s the cop’s house. You know; the one who lives with like ten cats.”
“Think he’s home?”
“Nah. He’s got duty this Halloween night. Let’s egg his house.”
“You sure there’s no one in there?”
“Yah. He lives alone. I mean who would want to live with ten cats?”
“True. Let’s do it!”
Dressed in their Halloween costumes, a child molesting clown and a boy dressed as a “sexy school girl,” Joe and Josh, respectively, started to grab the egg cartons out of their bags. Joe took his egg in hand and threw it high. The egg hit and startled a sleeping cat on the second story porch railing causing it to fall and break its neck on the ground. Lifeless, the cat laid there as the boys stared in shock and fear.
“Dude! You just killed the cop’s cat! He’s gonna throw you in jail for this!”
Joe turned and ran down the street. His outfit, multicolored with “clean” snippets of porn and sticky candy canes all over, covered him completely so he could not be recognized by anyone who even knew him except his friend who helped him dress up.
Josh followed behind hollering for his friend too stop. He saw a pair of headlights coming down the road, weaving. A moment later the car swerved and Joe flew off the side of the road as the car sped away. Under the streetlight, the car was visible and Josh tried to see as much as he can. After the car passed, Josh ran to see how bad Joe was.
Joe was twisted horribly and Josh had no idea how to help. He ran to the nearest house and pounded on the door. The old people inside answered. They asked what the matter was, seeing a boy dressed as a schoolgirl and crying visibly. Josh said he needed an ambulance for his friend who was just hit by a drunk driver. The old lady went to the phone and dialed 911. The old man went out to see what he could do for the other boy.
The man knew the boy was dead when he first saw him but comforted Josh. As they waited for the ambulance, a cop car pulled up. The cop to step out was the old cop who lived in the house where the boys had just egged and killed the cat.
Josh froze as the cop tried to ask him questions. Finally, Josh told the cop he was sorry for egging his house and told the cop everything as the ambulance arrived. The cop listened carefully.
“Get into the car so I can take you down to the station so you can try to identify the car.” The cop told Josh to forget about everything else, it was okay. “I have too many cats anyways.”
Josh described the car as best as he could remember from the brief time it was under the streetlight. “It was a Chevy Celebrity I think. 1980 something, dark blue like most of them and had a lot of rust on its hood and doors.”
Officer Smith, having lived in town most of his life, knew pretty much everybody. He didn’t like what he heard. If his thoughts were right, the drunk driver was the dead boy’s own father.
Officer Smith told Josh to stay here and calm down and to try to forget about everything else. Losing a friend is bad enough to deal with, Josh didn’t need the thought of being arrested for public nuisance and killing a cat to bother him, for now. Other people would be upset by what Joe and Josh did that night, but once word spread of what happened, they’ll probably say to forget it as well.
Officer Smith left the station in his patrol car and headed for Joe’s house. He hoped his fears were wrong, but one look at the passenger side would tell him all he needed to know.
Joe’s father, Brian Donney, had grounded him for not doing his chores. Mr. Donney told Joe he couldn’t go out until his work was done. They yelled and Joe ran out the door to his friend Josh’s house to get dressed up and have fun.
“Damn that boy!” Mr. Donney screamed as he downed another Genny. “He knows I need him to help out around here. Ever since his ma died, my dear Linda, he’s been hard to control. I just want him to do things while he’s home. I work all day, two jobs, and then try to have something ready for him to eat at some time.”
Mr. Donney finished his six-pack and grabbed his keys from the hook. He went out to his car and started it up. He drove around town, drinking at local bars then stopping at kid’s parties just long enough to make sure his son wasn’t there. The kids were scared and the parents hosting the parties threatened to call the cops if he didn’t leave. Finally, after buying a 40 of Miller at the local convenience store and beyond drunk, he tried to drive home.
With anger, drunkenness, and tears blinding him, Mr. Donney drove, swerving along the narrow, small town back road. He didn’t even see the figure on the side of the road until it was too late. He heard the impact and saw the multicolored body fly off the side. He never saw the other person and too scared to stop, he sped home.
Pulling into his driveway, Mr. Donney jumped out of his car, unlocked his front door, and sat in his living room in his favorite chair. Trying to think about what to do, he passed out.
Officer Smith pulled up behind Mr. Donney’s car. He stepped out with flashlight in hand and inspected the passenger side of the car. There was a dent, probably from impact, and ironically enough one of the snippets from Joe’s costume stuck to the fender directly linking the car to the accident.
Officer Smith walked up to the house and looked into the window as he began to knock upon the door. He saw through the living room window a large chair where a shape could be seen slightly slumped over. He began to knock and call out to Mr. Donney trying to get his attention. After a couple of minutes of banging and shouting, Officer Smith broke down the door into the house. He ran over to the chair and found a nearly lifeless body. Officer Smith immediately radioed for an ambulance to the address and began first aid procedures.
The ambulance arrived shortly after, being called out for the second time tonight for the same family. The head medical examiner later said Mr. Donney died of heart failure and there was too much alcohol in his system to properly obtain help for him. From a night of fun to a night of anger and chaos, this Halloween will be remember for a long time in the little town of Wenruc.
