Well, we got an inch or two of snow last night. I have to say that when I got out to leave for work this morning, the scenery was breathtaking. I wish I had my camera. With the sun just barely starting to rise, everything looked like it was right out of a painting. Everything was super-defined; every thin line had been enhanced first by being encased in about a quarter-inch of ice, then dusted lightly with snow. I could have stood there just taking it all in for a long time.
After this, however, I was reminded how destructive and disruptive weather can be, too. I had to take a hammer to our gate to break through the half inch of ice that made a superb natural lock, fusing the gate's latch to the rest of the fence. And as I drove by one of our city parks on the way to work, I could see piles of branches under each tree that had broken beneath the combined weight of ice and snow. One I saw must have been at least 4-5 inches thick. Luckily I didn't see any auto accidents on my way in, but I know they've happened. Not only did I hear talk of some on the radio, but people here get stupid whenever the roads get bad. It's like they forgot the experiences of last year when we had bad weather. Which is the problem, I guess. We don't often get weather like this...maybe once or twice a winter...but it's not often enough to get most people to remember how to behave when it happens. Last night when I was heading home, there were still people breaking the speed limit! It's people like that that I sometimes hope they get into a horrendous wreck that messes up their car but leaves them unharmed. ^_^; I don't want them hurt, but I do want them taught a lesson about idiocy.
Last night, we had wind, rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow, thunder, and lightning. There was fog downtown when I came in to work this morning. Supposed to have up to 6" of thick, wet snow by noon. The Weather Checklist is filling up nicely. I think if we get all of them in a short amount of time, it's either Bingo! or We're doooooomed! :D
