I have never been discriminated against because of my age before today. I'm 20. My flatmate Emily,
miss_chewinggum and I went bargain hunting in the Loros charity bookshop and they had a sign up asking for a volunteer to work Saturday afternoons. All they asked was that the person was mature, responsible and willing to learn. Now, to me, "mature" doesn't mean that somebody has to be of an older age, that says to me that they have a sensible attitude and approach to things or have reached the age of an adult i.e. 18.
So I asked for an application form, and the assisstant went to get the manager who came over to see me, and told me I was too young. Bearing in mind, that he had not asked my age, he hadn't asked if I'd had any experience in retail or in a supervisory position (which I have), and when I queried it a bit further he told me that it was managerial and he wanted someone much older. I was seriously surprised by this, the only thing he said to me at all as a reason was my age. There's a lot of talk about discriminating against somebody because they're too old particularly because of the pensions crisis and the potential raising of the retirement age, yet apparently it's ok to discriminate against somebody because they're younger. Yes indeed.
In other news, visited
spaceydaveb, which was lovely as we had a good catch up. At the risk of sounding rather pathetic, can't wait to see Lost tonight! I'm staying at
grandmasam's and after last week's fabulous episode tonight's should be pretty interesting.
