Way too much of my brain is occupied by these things.

So, I saw Star Trek again this weekend (where again = #4 actually, because I am a dork). I'm over being bugged by the techno-babble ("Prepare the red matter!" and while you're at it, reverse the polarity of the neutron flow!). And I'm over being bugged by the science trivia (If you're really coming out of warp in the atmosphere/magnetic field of Titan, wouldn't Saturn's rings be edge-on because Titan orbits in the same plain as the rings). And I'll never be over the plot holes, but that's where half the fun is afterward.

But anyhow, what really bugged me this time was the womens' ship-board uniforms. What kind of ship-board temperature do they maintain that it makes sense to dress the men in a double layer of long sleeves and long pants, while the women wear caplet sleeves and mini-shirts?

And, more importantly - rank insignia is at the end of the sleeve. The women don't have sleeves and don't appear to display their rank insignia anywhere else. Sooooooooo, what the hell? Women don't have rank? Woman are all ensigns (which is a blank sleeve for men)? That's obviously not true, because Uhura is addressed as "Lieutenant." Women have rank, but knowing what it is is unimportant? Woman have rank, but there are so few of them that it's unnecessary to symbolize it because they can all be recognized on sight?

This is bugging me way more than wondering how it is that all the cadets were sent to staff ships that were destroyed at Vulcan, but yet there are plenty of cadets running around the Academy when Earth is bring drilled and there's a full house during Kirk's award ceremony (including specific faces that were at his academic dishonesty hearing).
