I patterned up most of the coat yesterday and then hung out with the boyfriend today so he could cut it out. He's never cut out anything before so it was a bit of an ordeal, but it's mostly done now and saved me some work (although not time, I probably could have cut it out in half the time with the rotary cutter ;p). I left off the collar for now because I'm not entirely sure on the shape just yet, whether it's curved or straight. I'm inclined toward a straight collar, because it'd be easier, but also because the lining has lines that seem to go straight all the way around the collar. Thoughts?
I realized, again, yesterday that patterning something in the flat is one of my favourite stages of sewing. I love puzzling things out and trying to flatten the 3D shapes in my head and figure out how things go together. This one was pretty interesting. Here's what I came up with:
- There are 2 back pieces with a seam running through the CB and a CB vent up to the waist
- The collar is cut in 1 piece because there is no CB seam
- The fronts are actually different. The left front is wider than the right (which stops at CF) for the asymmetrical closure
- The side insets look to me to be two 1/4 circles (but may be 1/2 circles) with 8 tucks and a rounded corner at the wedge of the quarter circle
- The sleeve is a 2-piece sleeve (just realizing this now, I totally patterned a 1-piece sleeve, oh well)

his gif was really helpful for the back:
Aaaand it seems like I once again just filled your f-list with Jaime Lannister pics. Oops! How does that happen? ;)
I'm hoping to get this sewn up in the next couple of days, so expect some pics soon!
