Characters/Pairings: Mal&River. Entire Crew and some Secondary Characters
Word Count: 20,064
Author's Note: Well... here is some more. Entire Crew and this is more to expand the story beyond simple sexual liasons between Mal and River. I am working on the new chapter as I post this, originally this was started due to my fiancee's love of the show and her identifying with River and myself being very much like Mal. I have a few more chapters already done so I am sure the new one will be ready to be posted in nice succession.

Two days had passed since they left Persephone behind them. They were traveling in the opposite direction of the ion trails the Alliance Fleet had left in there wake. The atmosphere on Serenity had come crashing down again, there luck changed and it changed for the worse. War had returned to the New Universe and it had only just begun and yet the crew of Serenity we’re already down three friends and two others who might be joining those that had passed on.

River though was resilient in spirit as she was in body; she was slowly coming around and healing quickly. She had vacated the Medical Bay bed and returned to Simon’s room. He had to keep telling her not to move around so quickly; she was popping the stitches in her stomach every so often.

Mal was as he ever would be stubborn. The lung had collapsed several times and been re-inflated. Simon struggled with him day in and day out trying to get him to work his lungs and take his steroids on time. Mal had many other things on his mind all of them flooding back and forth from burning to just simple smoldering. Zoe would come and visit for a few hours a day, most the time though when she was in there everyone had to leave the room. River would sneak in at night and watch Mal while he slept.

This night was no different. There she stood starring down on Mal as he slept, she slipped her hand along his arm and down to his hand to cradle his fingers in her hand. Her face was covered by her hair and she just kept starring down at him, nothing could take her attention away from him.

“Keep away preacher man.”

She could feel the presence of Sheppard every time she entered this room with Mal.

“All the physics don’t compute and reveal the answer as to how you could be here.”

Simon was in the door way.

“It doesn’t involve mathematics, River. I couldn’t sleep and I figured I would check in on my patient.”

River spun around and looked at Simon and then she shook her head making a funny face.

“Not you, Simon. Someone else is in here.”

“Mal? He’s supposed to be in here, River.”

River walked around Mal and looked her brother in the face.

“You don’t have the parts I do… someone is here. I can feel it.”

Simon leaned over and started checking Mal’s vitals. He waited a few seconds and then turned his attention back to River; he was always interested in what the Alliance had altered on her, especially the Psychic abilities.

“So then, who is in here with us?”

River looked around quietly and then she looked back to Simon she knew he wouldn’t like the answer but he asked for it.

“…Sheppard…”

Simon tilted his head to the side and then looked at River.

“Sheppard is in the room with us? River, you know as well as I that Sheppard died back on Haven.”

“I know that Simon but he follows Mal. I can’t explain the scientific proof behind it but none the less he is within this room at the moment.”

Simon just shook his head a little and then closed the Medical Bay door and sat down on his stool as River moved closer to Mal to look down on him again.

“River… did you try to save Mal?”

“We are all trying to save each other on Serenity.”

“Yes but, I mean did you try to save him from being shot?”

River was a little uncomfortable with the question but she just let her fingers run up and down Mal’s arm inspecting it. He was dreaming now, he was dreaming of her, he spent many nights like that.

“I tried to stop the propulsion of the bullets from coming into contact with Malcolm.”

Simon shifted his chair a little closer, her voice was a little too low to hear.

“Why?”

River shifted and then she shook her head. She was flooded with a ton of thoughts about why she had done it. She knew most of them were not prudent to tell her brother.

“He has been kind to us in our difficult situation. So I attempted to help him avoid a difficult circumstance.”

Simon looked at her hard for a few minutes, she felt like his eyes were attempting to bore the true answers out of her mind.

“I wanted too.”

“Why though?”

Simon was edging her hard into trying to speak some of the truth that lurked in her mind.

“You do know, Simon. I’m an adult now… I’ve turned of legal age a hundred and sixty four days, seven hours, and thirty four minutes back. I am no longer your younger sibling to control with your over compensating parental tyranny.”

“I’ve never wanted to control you, River. I just want to know why you harmed yourself to try and save him of all people.”

She looked up, that last comment had ignited something inside her and she swept past the table and was in Simon’s face.

“He… is better then any man I’ve known besides my own brother. That’s including our father who would have left me to be dissected in that place.”

She could see the slight anger building behind his own thoughts due to the truth ringing in her last statement. She waited for his retort but it never came. He just rose and left the room swiftly.

River turned back to Mal lying peacefully on the bed and she reached out and ran a hand over his face.

The next morning came and Simon was already taking double care of Mal. He didn’t know where River’s compassion for him had come from but it made him slightly uneasy about the budding friendship between them. He couldn’t quite connect it in his mind but somewhere he knew why she had taken the bullet for Mal. He simply didn’t want to admit that to himself, as though the plausibility of the thought was absurd.

Within two more days of Simon’s immediate care Mal was back to walking conditions at least.

Mal didn’t need much hoopla about his recuperation. He was sitting on the bridge when Zoe woke the next morning; she was making her way back from the bathroom. She almost didn’t realize who it was sitting at the flight console.

“Mal?”

Mal spun the chair slowly around to look at Zoe and then he waved at her.

“Good Morning, Zoey.”

She smiled and immediately moved through the hall and up into the bridge and gave him a quick hug.

“Whoa… careful now, don’t need to spring another flat.”

Zoe stood back and nodded a smile at him.

“It’s just good to see you back where you belong, Sir.”

“And it’s good to be back.”

Mal stretched his arms very slowly above his head and then laced his fingers behind his head and leaned back in the chair. He groaned a little and finally relaxed.

Zoe turned and closed the hatch to the bridge. She spoke as she turned from the closed door.

“So are you planning to follow through with what we’ve been discussing?”

“I was on a lot of very nice pain medications, Zoe. You’ll have to be more specific, because if memory serves me correct I had several conversations with Sheppard and even…”

He stopped cold in his sentence; he didn’t want to mention the strange yet heartening conversations he had with Wash. He couldn’t be sure if it was the blood lose or the pain medication or just… something more then himself facilitating these conversations to occur.

“Well… I’m speaking about the plans to meet up with some of our Old Friends.”

Mal looked at her carefully and then nodded his head.

“I recokin’ it’s the best choice at this moment. See if there are places to hide or see if there is any way not to get into the thick of these things.”

Zoe nodded her head and then opened the door again and she looked at Mal.

“I agree, Sir. You plot a course to wherever you think some old friends will welcome us in for a spell.”

Mal nodded and Zoe walked back to her bunk. He turned back to the bridge console and then he laid his head back. He didn’t want to think too much at the moment and his weakness was sneaking up on him slowly. He just started to doze a little.

Mal’s eyes snapped open at hearing the bridge door being closed and locked. He strained to look over his shoulder and immediately lips connected on his quickly. The warm soft lips slowly slipped over his and then finally they broke away. He opened his eyes again and River was smiling at him.

“Hello there…”

She smiled wider at him.

“So my brother has done a satisfactory job of mending you?”

He moved his arm a little and then nodded.

“He’s done well… need a few more days of mending.”

She smiled and slowly her body collapsed into a sitting position on the floor in front of him looking up to his eyes.

“From what I hear I owe you my life?”

She looked down and smiled slowly, her head just sorted bopped up and down in agreement to the statement.

“I don’t exactly need to collect your life for repayment of it considering it was a failed attempt.”

“I was more worried about you.”

She immediately looked up to his face his eyes were starring at her and she could feel the flow of his thoughts. He began to think of her so warmly, it warmed all the cold parts contained beneath her skin, muscles, and bones to the hollow places that felt like they were filled with ice at times.

“Why?”

The second it left her lips it felt like a Why that would come from her lips when she questioned Simon about things when they were younger.

“Because… I see you better then anyone else can. I also have a soft spot in the sight I have for you. So…”

Mal was tripping through his thoughts and the way to place them to words to vocalize to her. River though could if she desired pick apart each tripping thought and ingest them. She just smiled at him and then noticed the slight blush developing on his cheeks beneath the small amount of stubble that had developed there from his incapacitated state.

“I understand… least I think I do.”

He smiled at her now and then she leaned up and kissed him again hard on the lips. She loved the way he would feel to her mind and to her body when she touched or kissed him.

Mal broke the kiss and sat back in the chair and sighed a little.

“I’d love to indulge your niceness… but I’m feeling a little weak still.”

River smiled coyly and sat back onto the floor and just stared at Mal. He looked at her a little while longer and then leaned over her to punch in some commands onto the flight console. River just wanted to be near him at the moment. Her thoughts traveled though to their private relationship that was developing steadily. She smiled to herself and then looked up at Mal.

“Yes, Darlin’?”

River shifted from side to side to settle in a sitting kneeling position. Her eyes stay on Mals for the longest time. Mal was slightly uneasy the way she was but he was growing more comfortable with her and the silence between them at times didn’t feel like a void, more like an agreement of harmony.

Serenity swept forward still on her knees and she let her hands glide along Mal’s legs. Her fingers slowly pressed in once her hands had reached his thighs. He looked at her quietly and then tilted his head. She moved closer to him now and then her fingers slowly grazed over his crotch. He twitched a little under her seductive touch and she smiled at the small little jump. Her fingers were nimble and lithe they moved like fingers would over a piano, they teased at his covered flesh like she was playing a piece by Chopin. Mal just watched her closely as she was touching him.

She slowly reached for his belt and started to unbuckle his belt, her fingers were swift and they undid the zipper just as quick. Without notice she had undone the clasps on his holster suspenders, and she slipped his pants down slowly below his knees. He was being undressed by her right in front of her. He never really felt awkward about himself at all but at the moment he seemed almost bashful inside. She slowly brought down his britches. She looked up at him slowly and then finally to his naked lower half.

Her fingers slowly went along his naked inner thighs almost scratching his skin with the gravity that brought her to him. Her fingers had a presence on him that was tender yet vicious in their intent of want. She slipped her fingers higher and finally the one set slowly wrapped around his soft cock and began to manipulate it gently, the other set slowly went to his testicles and began to massage very slowly into them.

Her fingers were coaxing his cock quickly to life and it soon began to grow in her fingers which now laced around it. She began to slowly bring her hand up and down the shaft of his cock. He murmured a breathless protest that she implicitly ignored. She more wanted his moans which soon came from deep within his chest like a growing thunder storm to her ears. She lowered her head slightly to better listen to the moans. She smiled wickedly at the way he moaned and then she turned her head up to look at his face. His eyes were slightly closed and she could see his pleasure and enjoyment of her attention.

She slipped closer and finally her hand that was working his cock slipped away and up his chest, she slipped them along the center of his chest and then his old scars and then she stopped before touching the freshest wound. She lowered her head and slowly her lips fell against his cock. She kissed it lightly and then slowly she slipped her tongue out and let it slowly slide over the head. He moaned and grinded his teeth together, she could feel his thoughts circling and slowly draining away to be completely focused on her again. She licked her lips lightly and then slowly began to slip her mouth down his cock. She began teasing the underside of his cock.

She was slowly working her mouth over his cock, easing slowly into her mouth just tasting his flesh on her tongue. He groaned a delighted moan and then she slowly looked up at him; his eyes were slightly cracked open, with a haze over them. She loved the way he desired her, it was as though blindness to everything else occurred and all he could see was her. She slowly stopped letting him slide out of her mouth softly and then she slowly climbed up his bed and into his lap, twisting her legs up and apart and then she sat in his lap. Centered she weaved her hand between their bodies and she gripped at him again.

She slowly held his cock and then she pulled her panties to the side and she began slowly rubbing the head of his cock along her already soaking cunt. She guided it slowly between her lips, letting it slip through her juices and then finally she’d pull it up and let the head nudge against her already swollen clit. She moaned and sucked in a breath between her lips. She loved this, he sat docile and she was pulling the strings. She continued to slide his cock along the outside of her. It felt exhilarating when she’d slide him between the lips of her pussy and let the head just slightly begin to invade her and she could feel the tension in his muscles just wanting to buck up and bring himself inside her. She kept this slow torture up for awhile. It was torture for the both of them. She was working herself closer and closer to her orgasms that would come when she finally succumbed to her animal instincts towards Mal.

He pressed his forehead against hers and then kissed at her lips longingly. This attention was so contradictive to the state they were in. She loved every sense that made this moment seem to last forever. Finally though temptation had built too far and she finally guided his cock deep into her wet cunt. She shoved her hips down hard on him and he moaned against her lips. They began to slowly rock in the chair, the positioned offered relaxation but at the same time ease at driving themselves farther into their passions. She leaned away from him slowly and his cock rose deeper inside her, she moaned at the feeling. His reaction was a moan that sounded like a soft growl. She began to rock slowly back and forth, on the forward thrust of her hips she’d raise up a little and then on her back strokes down. She was moving him in and out of her body with a gentle ease that placed him in a calmed yet passionate state.

She slowly worked her hips this way and began to slightly roll her hips in a small circle. She felt him throbbing inside her and it drove her wild, raising her body up higher and letting it crash down on to him again. This continued for several moments before she felt the throbbing grow into a twitch at the base of his cock that shivered it’s way all the up to the head of his cock when finally his cum filled her hard and deep. It was so warm inside her now, all the ice had melted. She eased herself onto him and she licked the side of his neck to taste his sweat.

Mal held her hips with a tightened grip but it was gentle in its own rugged means. They had given in once again to the feelings growing between each other, making them both question their own voices within their minds.

River kissed him slowly on the lips and she slowly stood up from being on top of him, she helped him put his clothes back on and get them situated and then she leaned in and kissed him hard on the lips. She could feel the words he was thinking about too say to her and that was enough for her at the moment. She turned after running a hand along his cheek and opened the door to leave the room. She was greeted by Zoe at the door that smiled at her kindly and then eased past her to gain entry to the Bridge. River looked over Zoe’s shoulder and saw that Mal was still smiling and watching her leave. She closed the door and walked away.

Zoe turned slowly and sat down in the opposite chair. She eased her breath into her lungs and then pushed her hands through her hair.

“Sir… permission to speak freely.”

Mal looked at her slightly concerned, now fearful that perhaps she had saw something through the window.

“No need to ask that, Zoe.”

Zoe nodded her head slowly and then she edged a little forward in her chair and her elbows meet her knees and she was looking right at Mal in the eyes, this position bringing a grave concern to Mal because she looked beyond serious.

“I don’t… know if I’ll be able to follow where you’re leading us, Mal.”

“Zoe… you having second thoughts? You’ve never questioned my orders before.”

She turned a little and looked away from him. Mal stood slowly and walked over to her placing a hand on her shoulder.

“What’s wrong?”

She cleared her throat and she wiped at tears that could have been forming at the edges of her eyes.

“God Damn Gromeian Luck of it…”

He looked at her now more concerned for her then ever before.

“… Goes and dies on me, being a god damn hero.”

Zoe turned and looked at Mal now; the tears were forming faster now, forcing Mal to lean down to her.

“I’m deeply sorry about, Wash. If you need to talk to someone about it, I always have you covered.”

“We always have each others back, Mal. But… I needed Wash for this.”

There were both silent for a moment and the silence was a void, questions were flooding Mal’s mind while grief and regret were filling Zoe.

“Well I’m here for you.”

Zoe didn’t answer and she stood up quickly and she kicked the pilot seat that Wash always filled. It rolled fast back into the wall crashing slightly.

“He got what he wanted Mal… he died being one of us. And… I got what I wanted from him. I need him for it though. I ain’t this strong.”

Mal looked at her confused, his eyebrows cocked questioningly and then Zoe finally cracked under the pressure.

“I’m pregnant.”

Mal stood there a little taken back he was at a lose for words at the moment. There was not witty anecdote that could suave her emotions to calm.

“Huhhhh…”

He just nodded his head and then Zoe began to break down in tears, she moved towards Mal and she quickly pushed her face against his chest. A lot of this was bottled away only like a warrior, a trained soldier could do. The dam of emotions had finally broken with this last straw. She was crying into his chest and all he could do was holding her shoulders, he couldn’t ease this pain away for her, just help her along till it subsided.

Zoe collected herself and then turned her face up to look at Mal strongly.

“Don’t tell anyone about this, Sir.”

“I’ll hold your confidence.”

Zoe left the room and Mal just stood there. He was trying to comprehend everything that had just happened before him. It was all banging together in his head like a tinker day parade.

Mal looked around and then quietly sat himself down at the flight console and he punched in the quadrants for an old friend that could still be lurking around.
