Chapter 4 - A spiral leading to nowhere

Undefeatable, like any other new HNMLS, started off by doing gods in Tulia. It is probably hard for members that joined our LS recently to imagine our LS being sky heavy, but at the time, our weekly schedule consisted of 2-3 gem hunts during the week and a god hunt during weekends. Most of my sky knowledge was earned during this period of time. Even though I do not have any map for any Tulia zones (I still don’t have them), I know pretty much the entire area by heart.

The thing that I remember most about our early sky hunts was our struggle against Byakko. We wiped to that thing 4-5 times before we figured out how to kill it. It was kind of odd for us to wipe like that since we have killed Byakko before when we were still in Kaminote/Akanoishi with lower level members. When we finally killed it, I remember people literally going nuts on LS chat as if we just downed a wyrm or something like that. Just to show how much we struggled against him, we killed all the other gods within the first 3 weeks of sky hunt (LS was formed in September), but we couldn’t kill Byakko until sometime in late November.

Of course, back then with the old claiming system, most of the meaningful hnms were dominated by jp linkshells. I can’t remember if it was FI, I think it was a collection of jp shells. To be honest, even if these land kings weren’t jp infested, chances are I wouldn’t camp them anyway. I really hated the idea of camping something for 3 hours everyday regardless of time. Moreover, I realized it early on that most of the loot from the 3 kings are toys and are not necessary for further progression in the game. There are only 2 items from that pile that I consider useful, one is the enmity helm from fafnir and the other one is the defending ring. All that other stuff, the ridills, the e bodies, the martial stuff are cool and everything, but it really isn’t worth the trouble in my opinion.

For a very long time, sky was pretty much it for us, day after day, weeks after weeks. Looking back, I think undefeatable members, at least the more veteran ones, should consider themselves lucky. It only took our shell 6 months or so to snap out of the sky-only mindset and move on to other things, or at least move away from Tulia. Some shells, Tomodachi LS comes to mind, were deeply immersed in sky a lot longer than we did. In fact, I think some of their ex members recently got back together and back to Tulia they went. I really feel sorry for them. There was a period of time last year where just thinking about Tulia made me want to log off and play another game, it was truly disgusting.

I went back to Taiwan for vacation during the summer of 2005 and nothing really happened in game during the time since I only played sparingly. After I returned home in September, things started to change. The next few months are what I consider the most intense times of my FFXI story.
