What makes a man great isn't his wealth or the big number of people surrounding him or having all the great characteristics of humanity (all of which Dean doesn't have), but the love and the conviction he has with which all his actions are based on. And this is exactly what Dean does. He may be imperfect, broken, fallible. But he's still the Righteous Man.
On a less serious note, he's crude, and rude, and doesn't always think, but he's funny and oh so charming. Not to mention quirky, with his love for pie, Asian porn, sexy male doctors in sexy doctor shows, and the Impala. Seriously, who wouldn't prefer this character as the savior of humanity?
