Chanyeol was the creepy-happy type. The one with the bursting amount of energy and common sense most of the time. You’d think that he was the type of guy who’d be crying in the middle of the day and laughing in the middle of the night, a very confusing stature of displaying emotions if one would ask. Their whole class would be bubbling in laughter everytime he was there. Noisy and annoying. Very expressive.  Blunt to a fault.

Park Chanyeol was the type of guy who would most likely fall for someone like Kris Wu.

And this was the little bet that he and his friends Yixing and Minseok had been arguing about ever since they stepped foot inside their classroom a month ago. The three of them had been the talk of the town from the moment they entered the University as transferees and they still were until now. Being Chinese (half, in Minseok’s case since his father was Korean), or a foreigner in any case had its perks, adding to the fact that they knew they had faces to brag for, though in no sense were the three of them alienated from the culture and language, at some point in time, some of them have lived there for quite a long while before returning to their respective hometowns.

As expected, all sorts of glances were thrown upon the trio as they proceeded to their first period. Awkward glances, interested ones, even ones that have more desire than to get in their pants than anything else.

Minseok responds with a smile and looks down meekly.

Yixing retaliates with a playful smirk, his dimples emphasized.

And then there was Kris.

Kris shrugs it off like a boss…

Surprisingly enough, he’s the one who ended up with more admirers.

The tallest of the three took his usual seat and the one in front of him, Chanyeol, turned to look at him for a moment and blinked, before bowing his head a little in acknowledgement, a small smile on his face.  Yixing and Minseok turned to each other, their eyes doing all the talking for them.

‘He totally digs Kris.’ Yixing darted his eyes towards their friend and their other classmate.

‘I have nothing else to say to that.’ Minseok turned his head the other way, trying not to get involved with it anymore and mustered
all his focus on the ongoing lesson as their Professor rambled unintelligibly about Biochemistry and other topics that none of them had understood much.

For the past two hours of the lecture, mindless droning as Yixing would say, everyone in their class was more or less drained and it was unfortunate that they had yet another class up on their schedule. Their next period was composed of the same people from the previous classroom… sans Chanyeol.

Kris and Yixing had no source of amusement without the energetic one, Minseok could care less though, he warned them that sooner or later, their little deal would bite them back on their asses.

They wouldn’t see Chanyeol until later, their last period.  In any sense, it wasn’t at all surprising that he had different classes, he was after all, a Political science student, an ironic disposition of interest considering his personality and overall oddity.  Chanyeol was a puzzle, and he was yet to be figured out.

A quiet stroll had taken Kris far along the deepest reaches of the campus where the trees had stood side by side, constantly testing the ages and coaxing the ever changing weather to hit them with its best shot. Minseok had tagged along with him this time, having nothing better to do and trying not to involve himself with Yixing’s attempts at romancing the majority of the people in their department.

“Hey Baozi.” Kris grinned, an expression unfamiliar to those out of his little circle of friends, which mostly consisted of him, Minseok and Yixing.

“Don’t call me thaaaaaaat.” Minseok half-whined, half-groaned at his friend, grabbing him by his collar and shaking him violently, his composure breaking at the sound of the nickname. He whipped his head towards Kris and gave him a glare, one that never fails to… make him fail. The older one looked more adorable with a fierce face in Kris’ opinion. “What is it anyway?”

“Why aren’t you with Yixing? He’s out looking for fresh meat.” Kris said with a playful smile as he kept on walking aimlessly on the brick pavement and looked up, trying to amuse himself with his surroundings.

The wind blew, a swift breeze making both of them shudder at the sudden cold sensation introduced to their skin.

“Are you kidding me?” Minseok retorted with a tone that would most likely entail a skeptic opinion. “That’s something you would do, not me. I’m not into romance… or anything involving relationships in general.”

“Please, you fell in love with a bag of baked beans back in China.”

“Hey! That’s completely uncalled for… besides, those baked beans were precious. They had more meaning to me than any being I’ve ever encountered.”

“Mhm. And I slept with your grandma.”

The older of the two gave him a once over and judged him so hard, it felt like his name was ready to be written in the book of the people going straight to hell.

“Somehow, I think that’s possible. You might as well have, anyway.” Minseok blinked and said the b word in between coughs.

Kris glowered at him and smacked his head upright, thankful that he is taller even though his friend is older than him. Height was always a usable advantage.

“Why would I even want to sleep with your… gross.”

His friend was ready to fire back a one-liner when Kris caught a glimpse of his watch. Had they been walking and fighting together for that long? Because he was curious as to why there was only five minutes before class started.

Kris never did get to ask Minseok the question he had after that day.

3 months and counting, there seemed to be no progress concerning their bet and Minseok was preparing himself in case he did get to say the four words that would bury Kris and Yixing alive for the rest of their non-virgin lives.

Not that they weren’t virgins anymore… or were they?
Minseok didn’t want to know anymore.

“Krissssssss…” Yixing called annoyingly. “Kriskriskriskriskris.”

“HELL, YIXING. STOP THAT.”

“Lover boy isn’t taking it like how we expected him to.”

“I KNOW.” He huffed, a scowl pasted on his…. usually scowling face… no once could tell the difference anyway.

“So… can I say it now or…” Minseok intruded, earning him a whack on the head. Kris did seem a lot more violent these days and he wonders why. Yixing turns to him with a knowing glance. Maybe this whole business with Chanyeol had bothered Kris way more than it should have.

Kris’ attempt at trying his usual no-nonsense, ignorant and stoic impression had done nothing for him for the past months and when he did take it up a notch, outright flirting and public display of… dominance and overall roughness, Chanyeol had only responded with a small smile and would turn away saying ‘See ya later’ or ‘You’re amusing, Kris’.

The last of his attempts had resulted to him getting into a relationship with that other Chinese kid who reminded everyone of a Panda, and then with a certain doe-eyed beauty named Luhan, who was also Chinese… both relationships not lasting more than a week.

It was pitiful since both of them were head over heels for the guy. Kris’ population grew tenfold after that, apparently people dig a heartbreaker. His breakup was the only time that Chanyeol had reacted though.

“I hope Luhan and Tao are okay. I always told them that they shouldn’t fall in love with a person who couldn’t think of them as special.” He said with that small smile again, it sounded almost condoning, insulting perhaps…  and it was enough to slap some sense into Kris.

How many hearts had he broken?

He silently wondered how it felt to have his heart broken instead.

The tall Chinese man had since then opened himself up more, acting outside the shell of his playboy attitude and cold demeanor, though this had all been because of Chanyeol. Kris had found himself trying to console the other boy, wanting to please him and trying to get as close to him as possible.

His conscience struck him the minute Yixing reminded him of their little deal.

Incredible guilt washed him over like a dilapidated boat on an unknown shore.

Chanyeol had not suspected a thing though, the boy had become more comfortable around Kris and grinned his infectious grin all around, the mere sound of his laughter enough to wash away the negative feelings right out of Kris’ system.

Kris didn’t know if he was still doing it because of the bet or something else.
Though there was this sickening feeling in the pit of his stomach that told him that he had already lost from the very beginning even though Chanyeol was finally warming up more than ever to him.

It was the last week of October when Kris had found his favorite lawyer to be in one of the empty practice rooms. Their University had pretty much everything, though it struck a curious thought that Chanyeol had chosen an old one with barely any instruments except an old piano, an incomplete drum set and an electric guitar and its amplifier and a mic as well as a small mixer.

Though old, the room had that comforting feeling and as the light danced through the window, a single strum was heard as Chanyeol sat atop the amplifier and tested his guitar.

Kris leaned against the door and watched with an amused smile on his face, observing the oblivious Chanyeol from a distance.  He knew Chanyeol wasn’t very good at dancing. He knew Chanyeol gets awkward at times. He knew Chanyeol wasn’t a fan of hostile behavior. He knew Chanyeol was a kind soul and an open heart.

How come he knew what he was and what he wasn’t?  Kris pondered on the question no more as he fixed his eyes upon Chanyeol.

This was something he didn’t know though. He always had a way of surprising Kris.

Chanyeol adjusted the mic and brought it closer to his lips and Kris drank in the wonderful sight before him. He started playing, his slim fingers dancing on the strings like five pairs of people dancing the waltz on a tightrope, a mixture of strums and plucks and then he started singing a song Kris heard a day ago.

Kris was surprised that the other knew Japanese. Though he should have known, the other was rambling about a certain Japanese product called Vocaloid the other day.

It was when Chanyeol had raised his voice, when his feet unconsciously started kicking as he swung his guitar to follow the rhythm that has swallowed him, engulfed him, that he noticed the big smile on Chanyeol’s face.

He knew that smile.

In fact…

He knew Chanyeol.

And as he finished the song, Kris knew that something else had ended far before things had started in this University. Minseok was right, it came back to him in the ass, the older man’s voice goading him and mocking him and saying ‘I told you so’ over and over in his mind.

“Time to say goodbye and just be friends.”

Those words seemed to have sounded fresh, his own words becoming salt poured on his freshly acquired wounds. Kris stared blankly, though his silent reverie was cut short when Chanyeol ran up to a blind spot inside the said practice room and Kris had to move closer,  he saw a laughing and blushing Chanyeol throwing himself on another man whose crescent shaped eyes had given his own identity away.

“Gah… I’m so embarrassed. That wasn’t what I was gonna sing in the actual performance, you didn’t have to watch me practice, Sehunnie.”

Sehun chuckled softly and stole a kiss on the other’s lips. “And miss spending time with you? No way.”

The lovers had laced their fingers together, making their way out and Chanyeol caught sight of Kris, his eyes softening, that small, all too familiar smile on his face again.

“Wu Fan…” Kris shuddered at hearing his real name. “That song was for you.”

Chanyeol knew. He knew he was there and he knew everything.

He was awestruck.

Now he knew what it felt to have his heart broken.
