Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

It's 4 am and just 3 hours shy of the release of the final book (7.01 am, SG time, to coincide with the UK release at 12.01 am)! I shan't be popping by the bookstore till much later, after I wake up but I'm feeling a mixture of sadness and excitement.

The purported spoilers that are circulating on the Internet have spawned many negative comments about Rowling and her last HP tome; and if her last few offerings are anything to go by, it does seem that the quality of her books has dropped. She can still churn out a great (and hefty) page-turner but with the dramatics and the offing of characters, I'm inclined to believe she does that for publicity and simply to be different from most other writers who write for children and whose stories have happy outcomes.

Nonetheless, I'm sad that this is the last in the series. It's been a long journey! Despite the sell-out to the movies, the meandering storyline and the sometimes-cheap publicity stunts, the HP series is a good one, drawing from different literary genres. The plot can be engrossing and the wordplay a fun deciphering exercise. If nothing else, it has made children read again, and that's always a good thing!

I'm looking forward to collecting and reading the book and hope I'm not spoiled terribly before then.

HAVE FUN, HP fans!
