In July of 2003, nuclear materials were discoverered strewn around Tuwaitha, Iraq. While US troops rushed to secure oil installations, the Tuwaitha plant was unsecured for more than six weeks. US military personnel broke IAEA seals in their search for weapons of mass destruction, then left the facility unguarded. Barrels of yellowcake and other low level radiation sources were looted by local residents. Radiation sources were found outside schools and in people's homes.
