[FST] The Hero of This Story

Because like any reasonable person, I adore the heck out of Vongola's beloved failboss, and because it's been too long since I experienced the addictive joys of FST-making.

► part one: the life and times of an ordinary jr. high school student
(minus the ordinary)

(sometimes i think this cycle never ends)

Expo '86 (Death Cab for Cutie)
I am waiting for something to go wrong
I am waiting for familiar resolve
I am waiting for another repeat
Another diet fed by crippling defeat
(Always the bottom of his class. Always the last to be picked in sports. No friends, no ambitions, no redeeming virtues whatsoever. "I'm not good at anything I do.")

Lost! (Coldplay)
I just got lost
Every river that I tried to cross
Every door I ever tried was locked
Oh, and I'm just waiting till the shine wears off
(When all your efforts are met with failure, eventually you just stop trying. Tsuna is not so much an inherent loser as he is a self-taught one.)

Bonfire (Third Eye Blind)
If nothing else I am myself
That's all I have to give
Everything's changing now
Oh, we could live like kings
If we take a risk
Or we could live in doubt
Everything's changing now
("Do it with your dying will." These words open up a whole new realm of potentiality, give him the strength to do things he never thought possible. The only problem is he was never cut out to be extraordinary.)

Glass of Water (Coldplay)
Son, don't ask
Neither how full nor empty is your glass
Cling to the mast
Spend your whole life living in the past
Going nowhere fast
(He hasn't quite learned to stop and appreciate the little things yet; it will be some time before he refers to this anarchic period in his life as "carefree." But even so, there are moments of calm between the storms, and moments of joy amidst the chaos.)

► part two: i was a teenage superhero
(and i have the scars to prove it)

(hook me up a new revolution)

Vindicated (Dashboard Confessional)
And I am flawed
But I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself
(The idea that other people might have expectations of him is as new as it is terrifying. But what really surprises him is that sometimes, he actually feels like he might be able to live up to them.)

Learn to Fly (Foo Fighters)
And I'm looking to the sky to save me
Looking for a sign of life
Looking for something to help me burn out bright
(It would be nice, though, just once, to feel like he has a clue what the hell he's doing. But being strong, being a leader, being a champion--naturally, all of that is uncharted ground.)

Fader (The Temper Trap)
Bless this mess
We tried our best
That's all that we can do
(First Mukuro, then the Varia. The obstacles keep on coming; all he can do is try his best not to get himself killed. There are times he thinks that being no-good was a hell of a lot easier.)

Times Like These (Acoustic) (Foo Fighters)
It's times like these you learn to live again
It's times like these you give and give again
It's times like these you learn to love again
It's times like these time and time again
(It's a process. Rome wasn't built in a day, and Reborn often suspects that grooming Tsuna into a mafia boss is a far more difficult task. But there's a universe of possibility between 'difficult' and 'impossible.')

► part three: help! i'm trapped in an apocalyptic future
(a common-sense survival guide)

(and we won't go down)

Sun (Acoustic) (Mae)
I'll ask you, what in the world should we do?
The light is green, our break is through
Are we not trying, or we're trying too hard?
(The future world is a disaster, and in that world, Tsuna is more lost than he's ever been, with more weight on his shoulders than he's ever had to bear. But they will win, he knows, because they have no choice. Because the alternative is too horrible to even imagine.)

This Time Around (Hanson)
Well, I've started feeling like I don't want to fight
Give in to the given and put out the light
Cannons a'blazin' shower these moonlit skies
Then I remember and I know why he died
Do you know why I'd die?
(Fighting for his family's survival awakens in him a determination that he's never known before. Perhaps inevitably for someone whose fighting strength has always been borne of desperation, it turns out that under these circumstances, Tsuna not only endures, but thrives.)

Kings and Queens (30 Seconds to Mars)
Into your lies
Hopeless and taken
We stole our new lives
Through blood and pain
In defense of our dreams
In defense of our dreams
(The Tenth generation of the Vongola family comes of age under the direst circumstances imaginable, fighting with everything they've got to protect everything they've ever known. And against all odds, they manage to stand their ground. The kids are still alright.)

We Are One Tonight (Switchfoot)
We are one tonight
And we're singing it out
We are one tonight
And we're dreaming out loud
And the world is flawed
But these scars will heal
We are one tonight, tonight
(Tsuna has never kidded himself about being a hero. On his own, he's nothing. The reason he is strong is because he fights with others, for others. The difference between him and Byakuran was that he was never fighting alone.)

► part four: the sins of the past
(have caused a lot of inconvenient misunderstandings in the present)

(time to take your place)

Hero (Regina Spektor)
Hey, open wide
Here comes original sin
It's all right, it's all right...
No one's got it all

I'm the hero of this story
Don't need to be saved
(So it turns out the Mafia world is rife with blood and betrayal. But it's one thing to know this, and another to experience it firsthand. An attack on one trusted friend at the hands of another--it's a blow that leaves Tsuna reeling like never before.)

A Bad Dream (Keane)
Where will I meet my fate?
Baby, I'm a man, I was born to hate
And when will I meet my end?
In a better time you could be my friend
(He's always hated fighting, but it's a thousand times worse when his enemy is his friend. More than ever, he can't afford to lose... but he can't see how he can win.)

The First of Me (Hoobastank)
You've finally woken up
If only just to prove
You were born to lead the way
And be the first of you
(At long last, Tsuna is growing up. And he demonstrates the newfound confidence Reborn has instilled in him in the unlikeliest of ways--by adamantly refusing, rather than accepting, the title of Vongola X. Whatever path he ultimately chooses, he's determined it will be his own.)

My Shadow (Keane)
'Cause when your back's against the wall
That's when you show no fear at all
(At the end of the day, he's an odd choice for a main character. He couldn't care less about saving the day and achieving his dreams. Instead, he's the type of hero who's never wanted anything more than a normal, peaceful life. The ordinary boy who, when push comes to shove, learns that he can rise to the occasion.

"The first words out of his mouth have always been, 'I can't do it,'... but this time, it's, 'Maybe.'")
