Better to measure progress by your own measure, rather than those around you.

My own measure has proven faulty more than once. Unfortunately, objectivity is hard to find in this place.

i still can't stop giggling at her. ^^;;; cold_dry_pieces January 17 2009, 06:11:12 UTC
Objectivity is something of a myth, really. Moreso here, though, I'll agree, where reality changes on a daily basis.

If you don't mind me asking, what is it you're trying to reform from?

Oh, no. There is an objective reality- the problem is, most people can only see the tiniest aspect of it, if anything at all.

Oh, didn't I tell you? I was a serial killer.

Subjectivity is easier to live with.

I think you might have mentioned it once, but I assumed you were cursed... I was on about hacking up people while on cocaine binges myself or something, I think, so I took it with a grain of salt.

Not for me.

Ah. No, I wasn't lying about that. I have a special ability that apparently made me homicidal.

To each their own.

Ah... Interesting... Well, the first step in recovering is admitting you have a problem, right?

I suppose it is. But it's not really much of a step, is it?

I mean, I know I've killed people. The difficult part is caring about it- caring about the act itself and the people I've hurt more than the shiny new abilities that killing them had got me. And in a couple cases, I can, but beyond that...

god sorry i suck at tagging |D had a road trip today, hee ^^;;;; cold_dry_pieces January 18 2009, 05:17:29 UTC
Mn. It should count for something that you want to care, though.

I can understand why you'd want an objective standard to measure by, at least, under those circumstances. Why you'd doubt your judgment.

Do you really think it should? If I kill anyway, it really doesn't matter, does it? Quitting an addiction to murder really has to be a cold turkey sort of thing.

Yes, exactly. I just wish I trusted anyone else's.

No, but trying to care is better than not caring if you care? You won't change if you don't really want to change, no matter the external pressure. I mean, actually stopping killing people is a necessity, too... I don't think they really make a twelve-step for homicide.

That I can't help with..
Given the general insanity of this place it might not be the best setting to find a moral yardstick. I think "killing is bad and not killing is good" might be the best you can do. Are you less... tempted to?

Not really, no.

You're probably right, but what if I have to, anyway? To protect someone else? Is that bad or good?

I have more incentive not to kill people, if that counts as being less tempted.

From a legal standpoint, at least, I think that counts as a variation of self-defense. From a moral standpoint it's frowned on, but forgivable as long as you don't enjoy it.

It's a start, I guess. Out of professional morbid curiosity, how many people have you killed?

You don't have to answer if you'd prefer not to.

I guess I don't understand why it's okay if I didn't enjoy it, but not if I did. But that is a hypothetical situation, I know.

I've killed somewhere around 30 people, not including collateral damage.

That's a bit of an oversimplification; it's a question of plausible motivation, I think. Might be best to just hope you never have to test the theory.

That's a long-standing habit to have to break, then.
