Magneto:
Name: Erik Magus Lensher
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 190 lbs
Hair: Silver/White
Eyes: Blue
Abilities/Powers:
Magnetic Field Manipulation:
One of the most powerful beings on the planet, Magneto is a mutant with the superhuman power to channel and manipulate magnetic fields that exist naturally or artificially. Magneto's power is, for all practical purposes, limitless. Magneto can maintain total control of an entire planet's electromagnetic field and manipulate it accordingly. Magneto has harnessed magnetism to stop armies, raise islands from ocean floors, move mountains, change the course of rivers, and threaten to devastate the world with apocalyptic floods and continent shaking earthquakes. Magneto once blanketed the entire globe with a self-generated electromagnetic pulse that caused widespread devastation. Moreover, he can use his magnetic powers in more than one way simultaneously. He can completely assemble a complicated machine within seconds through his powers. It is unclear, however, whether he must draw magnetic force from outside himself (if so, then he can do so over vast distances), or whether he can also generate magnetic force from within himself. Nor is it clear whether Magneto's power is psionic or purely physiological in nature.
• Magnetic Force-Fields:
Magneto usually protects himself with a personal force field that he can quickly expand to protect large areas. His force field has withstood the effects of multiple nuclear weapons, volcanic eruptions, the depths of space and attacks from multiple X-Men.
• Magnetic Flight:
Magneto is also capable of sustaining flight for very long distances and at varying speeds. He apparently has several means by which he achieves flight, one of which is by gliding along the planet's natural magnetic lines of force, another by simply creating a repulsive force between himself and the planet, propelling himself thus. By using his magnetic powers, Magneto can virtually travel at trans-light speeds; however, in order to travel in space, Magneto also requires his force field to breathe.
• Matter Manipulation:
Magneto is able to manipulate matter even to the subatomic level for a number of purposes. This might explain why, his not limited to objects with metallic properties and is able to manipulate objects with non metallic properties like wood, stone, plastics etc. to such a degree.
• Electromagnetic Sight:
By concentrating, Magneto can perceive the world around himself as patterns of magnetic and electrical energy. He can perceive the natural magnetic auras surrounding living beings.
• Metallic Bonding:
Magneto has recently presented the power to atomically bond metallic substances to any designated surface material. This newly developed technique allows Magneto to blend metallic alloys with the earth, water, and air.
• Organic Iron Manipulation:
Magneto can control the traces of iron within organic matter, which allows him to have full control over an opponent's body. He can manipulate the iron-enriched blood-flow to one's brain to induce aneurysms or unconsciousness, alter thoughts and perceptions, or blank a person's mind completely. He can even remove ferrous compounds from the bloodstream entirely through a person's skin.
• Geomagnetic Link:
Magneto is tied very closely to Earth's EM Field. As is it effected, so is he. He knows instinctively all that happens to it, and with this link, is granted an odd sort of immortality. Earth lends him strength by it's simple existence. He draws on it all unconsciously.
• Superhuman Strength:
Under normal conditions, Magneto possesses the physical strength of a well conditioned athlete. However, he can channel vast amounts of magnetic energy through his body for the purpose of granting himself vast superhuman strength which limits are unknown. Whatever those limits might be, he is ultimately able to lift far in excess of 100 tons with ease.
• Superhuman Stamina:
As a result of increasing his strength, he dramatically increases the overall efficiency of his musculature. While magnetically enhanced, his muscles produce considerably less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of a normal human. Magneto can exert himself physically for up to at least a few days before the build up of fatigue toxins in his blood starts to impair him.
• Superhuman Durability:
Under normal conditions, Magneto possesses the physical durability of a well conditioned athlete. However, he can channel vast amounts of magnetic energy through his body for the purpose of granting himself vast superhuman durability, to the point he can shrug off punches to the face from super humans while weakened and remain unharmed.
• Superhuman Reflexes:
He naturally possesses enhanced reflexes. He can further enhance this reflexes with magnetic energy.
• Superhuman Speed:
Under normal conditions, Magneto possesses the speed of a well conditioned athlete. However, he can channel vast amounts of magnetic energy through his body for the purpose of granting himself superhuman speed - or use electromagnetic lines to travel.
Electromagnetic Spectrum Manipulation:
Although Magneto's primary power is magnetism, he has some ability to project or manipulate any form of energy that is related to the electromagnetic spectrum. He can fire and absorb bolts of electricity and magnetic force, reverse lasers and other forms of radiation or energy, create enough intense heat as infrared radiation to level a city, manipulate gravity, and become invisible by deflecting visible light around his body. Infrared radiation is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which also includes visible light, radio waves, ultraviolet light, gamma rays and x-rays -- Magneto can project any of these. Magneto has demonstrated the capacity to produce a wormhole, and to safely teleport himself and others by means of the wormhole.
Astral Projection:
Magneto has occasionally been said to be able to manifest an astral projection of himself.
Telepathic Resistance:
Magneto has trained himself extensively for fighting telepaths - due to Xavier, and is resistant to telepathic attack. Additionally, Magneto is possessed of a strong will, which also aids him in resisting telepathic assaults. This is probably helped by being a latent telepath.
Genius-level Intellect:
A mastermind, Magneto is a genius within various scientific fields. He is an expert on genetic engineering and mutation, with knowledge far beyond that of contemporary science. He can mutate humans in order to give them superhuman powers, instill genetic mind-control, create adult clones of human beings, and then manipulate the genetic structures of these clones during their development. He has designed magnetically-powered aircraft and spacecraft, complex robots and computers, and magnetically-powered generators and created artificial living beings, space stations said to possess technology even Reed Richards would envy, and machines capable of nullifying mutant powers within a radius of several miles.
Military Training:
Magneto is a skilled strategist and has more than a rudimentary knowledge of hand-to-hand combat.
Weaknesses:
Physical Condition:
Magneto's ability to wield his superhuman powers effectively is dependent upon his physical condition. When severely injured, his body is unable to withstand the strain of manipulating great amounts of energy. When his powers are not at their peak, he also appears to have greater difficulty controlling forces other than magnetism. There is a possibility that Magneto simply has a genetic predisposition to magnetism that simply makes it easy for him to manipulate it. Magneto also is limited by the fact that he needs food, water and oxygen in order to survive. He is also susceptible to physical and mental fatigue that can ultimately affect his ability to adequately use his powers.
Equipment:
The costume that Magneto wears is actually a type of armor that he has created through the use of his magnetic powers. The costume is actually an amalgam of various lightweight, but highly durable, metallic alloys that further protects him from many forms of physical injury.
Transportation:
In the past, Magneto has used a number of exotic aerial vehicles of his own design. He is also fully capable of flying under his own power, which he tends to do most of the time.
Weapons:
Magneto relies primarily on his natural powers, although he has occasionally used magnetically-powered devices he invented, such as his machine for inducing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions from afar.
History:
Magneto, born Erik Magnus Lensher, was a young boy when his family was murdered by "guerrilla fighters" - Nazi sympathizers - after his family fled Germany and were living in Eastern Europe. Charles Xavier places him a member of a “small country” that had been “brutally occupied” during a war, leaving the impression that his family fled to a smaller country. He was taken to various concentration camps, ultimately landing in Auschwitz. Due to his apparent "luck" in not getting shot and his ability to fix mechanical things he was spared the fate of the rest of his extended family - that is, death. He wasn't labeled a "mutant" but attempts were made, unsuccessfully, at experimenting on him.
Depressed and alone, Magneto made his way to Israel, and began working in a hospital's psych ward as an orderly, helping to care for patients still traumatized by the war. There he met a young Charles Xavier, a doctor, a man who would be both his friend and adversary in the years to come. He began working closely with Xavier, and they bonded over patients and ideas but didn't reveal each other's mutant status to the other, until patients were kidnapped by Nazi operatives. Fighting together, they defeated the operatives and saved the patients who had survived. It is during this fight they reveal their powers to each other, and according to Xavier they first time they shared their powers with anyone. Magneto stole the gold they were hiding and began the rift between Xavier and Magneto.
After parting with Xavier Magneto met a Romani girl named Magda. They eventually fell in love, and married. Sometime later, Magda became pregnant. Magneto described her as a gentle woman, and stated what he was fighting for, and the man he was becoming frightened her. Terrified of the man he'd become, she fled, not telling him of her pregnancy. Magda would die before Magneto could find her, never finding out she was pregnant, nor that she had given birth to twins - Wanda and Pietro.
Over time, Magneto and Xavier became enemies. Magneto gathered followers and attempted to destabilize the world by attacking power plants, military bases, and chemical factories so that mutants could take over. During this time Magneto and Xavier fought each other until Xavier finally defeated Magneto and Magneto retreated into hiding, but not before harming Xavier so badly that Xavier would become paralyzed.
Magneto spent this time in hiding educating himself on genetics and building bases - one of which in the Savage Lands, located in Antarctica.
Some time after the X-Men were formed, Magneto attempted to start a war of sorts, launching their own nuclear weapons against USA. After Xavier and the X-Men intervened and stopped his plan, he baited Xavier by destroying chemical plant to force Xavier out of hiding. He expressed to the X-Men, “Better we die on our feet then live on our knees.” - his answer to why he fought humans at all. After Xavier telepathically beat Magneto by forcing his to relive memories of his childhood, he fled the factory in a panic.
After he lost this battle he retreated elsewhere, reappearing to kidnap Senator Kelly to a sunken ship with plans on killing him. Senator Kelly had recently announced he would be running for president and was one of the chief backers of the Mutant Registration Act. Sentinels attacked and kidnapped the senator again and the X-Men were forced to save him.
A few months later, Magneto received what he believed to be an urgent message from an old friend - Charles Xavier - and goes to save him. Xavier was responding to a similar message. Turns out to have been a trap and they were left without their powers in the Savage Lands, with dinosaurs and cavemen-like people. Magneto had previously built a grand citadel there, and created the Mutates - genetically engineered mutants. Magneto and Xavier fought and survived together, saving each other’s lives many times over. Magneto expressed that even powerless, he would not be an easy kill. He also wondered why Charles didn’t leave him to die, as Charles’s life would have been much easier without Magneto alive.
Finally grown weary of the fighting, in 1993 Magneto created Asteroid M - an asteroid in the Earth's orbit - as a safe haven for Mutants. He invited all mutants, including the X-Men, to live there. While he stopped at Genosha to free the mutants being kept as slaves, he was attacked by the Genoshan Army as well as sententials, but Magneto acted defensively despite being weakened. A follower of Magneto, Fabian Cortez ‘healed’ Magneto and encouraged him to kill the humans. But Magneto refused, stating he came as a liberator, not as an avenger. Xavier became concerned due to Magneto dangerously overexerting himself and his powers, and depending too much on Cortez’s “healing” - which was really a recharge - as a drug. During an attack started by Cortez launching a missile at the US, Magneto refused to kill or harm the attackers, wanting to be left alone. Cortez betrayed Magneto, stating Magneto didn’t have enough power to hold his molecules together, and ejected Magneto’s chamber into space. Magneto managed to make one telepath call to Xavier as he hurtled towards Earth.
On Earth, Xavier gave Magneto a memorial service, believing he has died, saying “Although I abhor his methods, I cannot fault his strength of character, farewell Magnus; at last you have found your peace.”
On Earth, Magneto crashed, more a ghost than a man, yelling only, “I LIVE!”
Cortez, exposed as Magneto’s assassin, launched the warheads, which Magneto - now recovered, caught. Magneto stated, “You failed Cortez. The Earth’s magnetic field has healed me, as a mother nourishes her son. NOW I WILL HAVE MY VENGENCE!” After the battle, Xavier called to him telepathically, asking Magneto to return to Earth with them. Magneto replied, “Thank you Charles, but if my dream must die, I must see it to the end. In time, the world might have learned to trust us. Now that hope has been lost. Do not concern yourself, I shall survive it.” And with that, he plunged the Asteroid to Earth after the X-Men evaced the people on the Asteroid. The Asteroid lands in Paris.
Magneto is not seen again for some time, until he is contacted by someone claiming to be his long-dead wife, Magda. Magneto, knowing he has enemies, turns to Charles, asking his to check for mutant activity in the area, but telling him not intervene if it is a trap. Which, of course, it is. While meeting with the person he believes to be Magda, he pleads with her to come back to him, that he has changed, and is sorry for the pain he caused her. Magneto is captured by the High Evolutionary with the help of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch - Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, who tell him they are avenging one who has fallen in his path. He replies they will need to be more specific, as there have been many. When Wolverine intervenes to save Magneto, he destroys, Magda’s grave marker and Magneto yells, distraught that he told Xavier not to interfere. Wolverine, Magneto and the twins are captured by the Evolutionary by the use of knock-out gas, who reveals he wants their DNA to further his work, and the twins are Magneto’s children stating, “For it is the blood of the Father that gives life to his Children!”
Magneto tells the children about their mother. When Pietro tells him that he supposed Magneto thinks his suffering makes it [Magda’s death] alright, he sadly states, “No Pietro. I’m afraid nothing ever will. Now that I know what this is about, I shall hold back no longer. We shall not perish at the hands of a psychotic biologist.” With that, he frees himself and the twins, calling “Come on! We have a score to settle!” And taking the twins to battle with him, they fight. Magneto catches Pietro with a cry of “SON!” - attached words, for a man who never knew he had a son. When the High Evolutionary flees, Magneto states, “There is no place in this planet for him to hide from me.” Carrying Pietro to Wanda while Pietro recovers his breath, Magneto tells them, “Knowing you two, my life can never be the same. Perhaps, in time, we could get to know one another better.” Pietro interrupts him, blaming him for Magda’s death. “I have no excuses, losing Magda was the greatest regret of my life. Not a day goes by I don’t think of my love for her. But as for the two of you, I swear I would have come for you if I had know the two of you were alive.” Wanda replies now they will never know, and she and Pietro depart. “How can they ever forgive me for what I did to their mother?” he asks Xavier, who advises him to give them time. Beast offers his condolences. “I have lost her twice now! You don’t know, none of you will ever know.” Magneto departs, having lost his beloved, and his family, yet again.
Later, Magneto appears to join with Apocalypse but turns on him, stating he knew Apocalypse wasn’t to be trusted. During the battle, Wolverine saved a stunned Magneto saying, “Oh look who I’m savin’ you’d think I was Xavier.” Later in the battle, Magneto saves Wolverine saying, “Look who I’m saying, you’d think I was an X-Man!” Xavier tells Apocalypse that “time and thought are one”, and that he and the other psychics are forcing him out of the time chamber - and without his ‘Lazarus Chamber’ which has allowed him to live for millennia he will no longer exist. Back on Earth, Xavier tells Magneto they have accomplished something great, and asks him if it felt so odd to be working together. “No Charles. Perhaps if we could start the world over, it would be possible again.”
Later, when the Phalanx attacks Earth, Beast and a rescue goes looking for Magneto at his Antarctic base, finding him alone sitting in the dark, with armor in a pile on the floor, unshaven for so long he’s grown a beard. Magneto replies for to plea for help with anger, telling the rescue party they had no right to ask for his help, considering they “violated my sanctum” and brought Mr. Sinister, who he calls a “vile creature” with them. Beast interrupts an agreement between Magneto and Sinister, calling Magneto “Magnus” - something only Charles has done (interestingly, Magnus always referred to Charles by his first name in conversation as well) telling him all life, including his own, was threatened. Stating, “Then let them come. Losing Asteroid M has made me weary Dr McCoy, weary of this endless struggle. GO! Leave me in peace!” Magneto dismisses them. Beast replies Magneto’s son, Quicksilver, has been captured. “Pietro. My son…” Beast urges Magneto that it is not too late, they can save him still, his Magneto’s help. Rising and calling his armor from the floor, Magneto asks, “Where do we begin?” Magneto uses his powers to capture a piece of the Phalanx, his power protecting him from it. Magneto helped deliver the weapon to the Phalanx core, pretending to drop Warlock into the Phalanx to deliver the weapon - a virus that killed the Phalanx. While the X-Men reunite, and Pietro’s fate unknown, and Xavier expresses his gratitude that they all were working together, Magneto tells him he sees nothing but people trying to save themselves. Xavier tells Magneto that even if he’s given up hope for himself, there are reasons to work together for a better future, “here comes one now.” Pietro walks towards the group, Magneto calling to him, “Pietro! Thank God you are safe!” and pulls Pietro into a hug - one Pietro returns.
Magneto appears to recover somewhat from his depression. The next time he is seen is while the “Mutant Containment Bill” is up. Charles Xavier, appearing ill, argues against it because the MCB would treat mutants as POW’s. Mutants are normally the victims, Xavier points out. Xavier is outed as a mutant on national TV in an attack that knocks Xavier into a coma. Although Wolverine believes Xavier to be dead at first, he is alive but dying. The attack galvanizes mutants behind Magneto, ready to fight a war, urging him to lead.
Across the world, mutants cry for Magneto to lead them. “Friends! Our moment in history has arrived! We all have felt the sting the human hatred, seen the disgust smolder in their eyes. We have all groveled and hidden, like beaten animals anxious for a crumb from a master. We have lived too long in darkness and fear! No more! Nature has made us superior; we are the living future of this mighty planet! This world is OUR World now! TAKE IT!” is his reply. Morph, pretending to be Xavier, tries to spread a message of peace. Xavier needs help from the Shi’Ar to live, but they cannot reach them. The X-Men decide to go after Magneto to stop the coming war.
“MY People! It is time! I have heard your cries for justice! And I now answer that call! Co-existence with humans was a dreamer’s delusion! The strong must flourish! You are the next step in man’s evolution!” Magneto’s call to war, “Too long we have waited! From this day forward, we shall be rulers! This is our righteous destiny! This is why -“ and he is cut off by Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Wolverine, who inform him Xavier is dying. “Xavier! Dying…a sad ending to a great life.” Stating it is his respect for Xavier, he spares the X-Men, telling them to leave him. Jean Grey realized that in the fight, Magneto’s powers amplified her own - and that he could help Charles reach the Shi’Ar for help.
“How much do you love Charles Xavier?” Jean Grey asks.
“How DARE you ask me such a question! HE was my ONLY equal! I owe him my life!”
“What would you do, if you knew you were the only one on Earth who could save his life?” she asks. Jean explains that Magneto could boost Xavier’s powers.
“You lie to torture me. My legions, my command, pledging body and soul to me. With a single word, I can remake the word. I cannot leave.” Magneto realizes he can have his war, or save his friend. “Why now? My greatest enemy, and perhaps my only friend…but I have WAITED ALL MY LIFE FOR THIS MOMENT!”
“Wouldn’t he do it for you?” Cyclops asks.
Magneto drops his head to his hands, and leaves with the X-Men to help Xavier.
Magneto agrees to help Xavier, understanding that if Xavier dies while they are connected, he may take Magneto with him. Their plan works, and Xavier awakens.
“Hello Magnus,” he greets, “Surely you have more pressing business to attempt to than nursing an old friend?”
“Nothing more important.”
“Thank you.” Xavier, after saying his goodbyes to his X-Men leaves with the Shi’Ar, informing them he will remain forever with them in spirit, and Magneto remains with the X-men.
Personality:
Magneto is two things above all else. One is a survivor. The other is a heavily traumatize man, haunted by the war that shaped his childhood and further deeply scared by his wife’s abandonment. At first, Magneto attempted to help people, but over time, he began to believe that the normal humans could never accept mutants. Magneto is however, capable of caring. Despite he and Xavier being enemies in his eyes - Xavier a traitor to all mutantkind - he rushes to Xavier’s aid, despite never knowing he had children, once he has that knowledge, he reaches out to them, loving them deeper. Even his pain of betrayal over Magda leaving him is shadowed by his great love for her. After Cortez’s betrayal he is even less likely to trust others. It is interesting that more than war, he desires peace, safety, and when Asteroid M is destroyed, falls into a deep depression. Knowing he is most likely walking into a trap, he forbids Xavier from helping him and is willing to let the Phalanx destroy him. In both cases, it is needing to protect his children that spur him into action.
