So 11 days ago I got a 2 month old puppy from the pound. When we picked him out and filled out the paperwork the people told us we had to wait until the next day to pick him up because he had to be neutered. So we came back the next day and brought him home with us. He was very tired and lazy for a few days but we figured it was just because he just had his nuts chopped off. Anywho, around day 4 he stopped eating. Day 5 he stopped drinking. Day 6 he stopped walking. Obviously we got a little worried and brought him back to the pound to find out what the matter was. We came to conclusion that we couldn't care for a sick dog. Neither of us can afford to pay for big vet bills right now. So we asked if we could leave him there until he was ready to come back home. They told us that they would not take the dog back because while he was kenneled there they felt that he had the Parvo virus. For those of you who don't know, Parvo is a highly contagious intestinal disease generally found in younger dogs that eats its way from the lower intestine to the lungs and eventually to the heart of the dog. Symptoms include lethargy, vomitting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, dehydration, and sudden death.
So basically, the pound gave us an animal that they knew to be sick and they also knew we had another dog at home because we adopted him 2 months earlier from the same place! I was pretty annoyed about this but we just said, "You'll be hearing from us soon." The next day we took him to the Humane Society to see what they thought would be best. They told us they couldn't accept him if he had Parvo but they would administer the test and if it came back negative they would admit him. Unfortunately the test came back positive and we were left with 2 choices, euthanasia (killing the dog) or a battery of drugs and home treatment. We opted for number 2 which entailed giving the dog pills twice a dog and administering an IV needle in his back that acted as a substitute for eating.
Today the puppy died and half an hour ago Josh and I left an animal clinic where we had to have him cremated because we aren't able to bury his due to how contagious this disease is. Yesterday I called CDAS again and told them what's been happening and that we expect them to pay the medical bills for the pup and for a test/treatment of our other dog. They said they'd call me back...which she did but I missed the call and she left me a message that says "Here's my number...but we're closing in 5 minutes, we're open on Tuesday." When I called yesterday I informed them that if we don't get help with this I'm going to the Naples Daily News, PETA, VeganOutreach.org, FoxNews, WINK News, and the ASPCA.
Sad, right? What can you do to help?
Tell everybody.
