"The number one rule to being cool is to seem unfazed, to never admit that anything scares you, or impresses you, or excites you."
-Sarah Kay
Kyuhyun has always been considered as one of the coolest people on campus. Girls would swoon whenever he passes by them. Boys look up to him, somewhat akin to worshipping him. He loved every bit of it. After all, who wouldn't want to be cool? However, he stopped being cool the moment he met a certain Lee Sungmin.
The number one rule to being cool is to seem unfazed...
Kyuhyun was lounging on his chair, waiting for their Mathematics professor to finally come in. (The bastard's 5 minutes late.) When the door opened, he was expecting to see Mr. Kim with his messy hair and shaggy eyes, and probably trip over nothing. What he didn't expect though was that he wasn't alone.
"Class, I want you to welcome our transfer student. Miss Lee, please introduce yourself to the rest of the class."
The new girl stepped forward and introduced herself with the sweetest voice Kyuhyun has ever heard.
"Good morning. I'm Lee Sungmin."
The smile she flashed the class melted Kyuhyun's heart in an instant, even though it wasn't directed at him specifically. He never really believed in love at first sight, but he'd start a new trend... he fell in love with the Sungmin the first time he heard her voice.
...to never admit that anything excites you...
After meeting Lee Sungmin, he starts to look forward to that one period of Mathematics that he has everyday. Before he met her, he doesn't really have a reason to attend the class, he's a genius anyway. (I thank whoever's up there for actually making me go to school that day.) He would fidget on his chair during the period before Mathematics, which just so happened to be Music, and his friends would question him why he's acting that way.
"Dude do you have a worm stuck up your..."
The monkey boy never really got to finish his sentence as their 'leader' covers his mouth.
"How many times do I have to tell you not to use words like that in public?"
"Teukie let him be. He's old enough anyway."
With that, Teukie released his hold and the one beside the monkey boy asked Kyuhyun instead.
"Hey Kyu, what Eunhyuk said."
Kyuhyun never answered. He wasn't really paying attention anyway. When Ms. Kim (Really, why are all my teachers named KIM?) started speaking, her soprano voice reminded him of Sungmin's voice, and he fell back to his thoughts once more.
...to never admit that anything impresses you...
Much to Kyuhyun's delight, he and Sungmin were paired up for their year-end project. He finally has the perfect excuse to be close to her. (Being the cool person that he is, he never approached her, even though he's head over heels in love with her since it's just not cool.)
He was astounded by Sungmin's wit and skills. He treasured every moment they spent together, and tried to find out more about her every day. He discovered that she can sing, play various instruments, dance, and do martial arts. He could still remember how she threw him over her back like a sack of rice. Painful, but impressive nevertheless. He told her about himself too, hoping that she'd like him enough for her to ask him out, or something along that line.
After handing in their project, Kyuhyun steeled himself in order to confess to Sungmin. (He realized that he wanted her, no, needed her, so to hell with being cool.) But before he was able to say anything, Sungmin uttered the words he was waiting all semester to hear.
"Kyu, I really like you."
He answered her by giving her a kiss, in front of the whole student body, and he discovered that her lips really are as sweet as her voice.
...to never admit that anything scares you.
It scared him when he realized just how much he needed Sungmin. They have already been living together for a month when Sungmin suddenly told him that she needed to go back home to her parents' house for 3 days, since her brother's wife just gave birth. Kyuhyun couldn't come because he had work. He helped her pack her bags, walked her to the waiting cab, and kissed her goodbye, telling her that it will only be 3 days, so she shouldn't miss him too much.
As it turned out, he was the one who would be missing her. He couldn't sleep at all for those 3 days. He couldn't eat. But he didn't want to call Sungmin. He didn't want to disrupt her time with her family. By the second day, he could barely move from their bed.
When Sungmin got back, he rushed downstairs to meet her, only to find himself kissing the landing of their staircase. Next thing he knew, he woke up in a white room that smelled horribly like the hospital.
"Where am I?" He asked, voice thick with sleep and fatigue.
"You're in the hospital silly. What have you been up to while I was away? I was only gone for 3 days and I come back only to find you out cold on the floor. The doctor told me you're terribly dehydrated and you look like you haven't been sleeping. What happened Kyu?" Sungmin questioned, the worry obvious from her tone.
"I missed you. I need you. Never leave me again Minnie, promise me." Kyuhyun uttered, much like how he did when he told his mother not to leave him on his first day of school.
"After today, I never would Kyu. Now, eat your porridge before it gets cold."
After that day, true to her word, she never did.
....
Kyuhyun's reminiscing was interrupted by Sungmin walking into their room.
"What are you thinking about? You must have been really deep in thought to actually let your hero die." Sungmin pointed out while staring at his computer screen.
"Well, I was thinking about how I stopped being cool when I met you."
"Cho Kyuhyun!"
"Don't get angry just yet. I just watched this video and well, she said something about the number one rule to being cool. I broke that when I first laid eyes on you. I was fazed by your beauty. The Math class I shared with you during university became the highlight of my day. All your talents astound me. And it scared me whenever I think of you leaving me."
"Awww, who knew that you could actually be this sweet. So what if you're not cool? You'll always be aDORKable to me!" She then pecked his lips and shooed him off to bed.
"Now, go to sleep. You have to wake up early tomorrow. Remember you promised Minhyun and Sungkyu that you'd take them to school."
And with that, Kyuhyun drifted off to dreamland, thinking that why he ever wanted to be cool in the first place, when all he needed is Lee Sungmin.
