I've been walking again for about a week now and, let me tell you, it feels great. Take a moment today to be grateful for functional legs and feet because you'd sure miss them if they suddenly didn't work- trust me, I know. I still have to hear the word from the Good Doctor as to whether or not I'm fully healed, but most of the pain and swelling is gone and I can walk with little to no trouble. Hallelujah! Now at least I can be considered the weird girl on campus for something other than my scooter.
There isn't much else to say in the way of excitement. Most of my life has been consumed by schoolwork but, surprisingly, that doesn't bother me too much. I totally love my classes this semester. For those of you who are interested, this is my schedule:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday
- astericks mean the classes don't meet Friday
**10am Book of Mormon (Rel 122)
11am History of Jazz (Music 204 Honors)
**12pm Second-year French Conversation (French 211R)
1pm "Living with Biology" (Honors 260)
Tuesday & Thursday
- astericks mean the class doesn't meet Tuesday
**11am Honors Lecture (Honors 292R)
1:35pm Comparative Literature (Comp Lit 202: Civilization)
Hopefully that wasn't too painstakingly confusing. It actually looks about as jumbled as one of Arthur's computer science assignments. Today I asked him "Why is this important?" as he was working on yet another CS program. "This is why..." he said. About twenty minutes later, he produced a black screen that said, "Hey sweetie! Pick a number." There were three numbers, each promising something cute like a rose, a kitten, or a catapult (yep, that's my boyfriend for you). I went through the first two and each magically appeared when I touched the right button--if I hit any of the other keys, it would say "Sorry, try again." Anyway, I finally got to the mysterious catapult option when my eyes beheld a sa-weeeet font spelling out my name! It was all made up of strange characters in computer-speak but it definitely spelled out Richelle. He created the program and the font for me.
That's another tally on my "You know your boyfriend is a computer science major when..."
But I like it. And I think it's cool.
Oh, but back to my classes. Book of Mormon is cool because my professor is really famous and he appears on the BYU Channel for lectures all the time, so my mom knows who he is. I feel like that somehow gives us a connection in life. Plus, he's a great lecturer and he always says something that makes me leave the class either feeling good about life or really thinking about things. You know how I dig that kind of stuff. Jazz is really sweet, too, because I feel so artsy for learning about such a free-spirited genre of music. I love that half my homework involves sitting and listening to my jazz CD or attending concerts on campus. Woe is me?
Surprisingly enough, biology is one of my favorite classes by far. After a month of reviewing the basics of biology--I think I learned more from Professor Bell in a few days than I learned in all of tenth grade bio--we started doing new topics every week. Doctor Bell would introduce the topic to us and give us a few controversial questions to seek out in our research. We would research, come back, ask questions, talk about our findings. Then we would compose a short (two page max) paper about what we discovered. Our first topic was cancer, then stem cells, next was mental health, and now we're talking about pollution and the environment and stuff. I think I might talk about deforestation of the rain forest because it makes me sad and I want the rainforests to stay. Some of my favorite memories as a kid happened in the little "microcosm rainforest" they had at the zoo. That was always my favorite part because it'd be all muggy and there would be exotic creatures and foliage. How much better does it get, folks? I mean, c'mon. Anyway, the prof is totally great and I'm learning so much in that class! 'Tis wonderful. I wish everyone could take it.
French?? Not so much. Although my francophone conversational skills are improving quite a bit. This past week, I had to give a five-minute presentation about any topic of my choice, so I told the extended story of my family. I had little cut-outs for all the people and a heart to symbolize people who are married, a textbook for the college kids in the family, and a map of Michigan with a fat red star where Coldwater is. It made me really proud to have grown up the way I did. Plus, I spoke in intelligent French for an entire five minutes! This was quite a feat for me.
Like I said, school has pretty much taken over my life in a big way. I can tell I will be burned out by the end of the semester, but for now I'm trying to enjoy it. I can't complain too much--life is pretty good. I think.
But I look at you, warm in your dream
While your mobile dances above
And I think to myself
It's a beautiful night
And I know everything
Is gonna be alright
Yes now I know
It'll be alright
bio (cool for once),
