The Jason Mraz concert on Sunday night was fucking amazing!!! I never really understood the concept of DeadHeads until that night (I knew what they were, I just didn't understand why anyone would want to travel around the country/world to follow a band). Now I do.
He put on SUCH an amazing show. His energy was the most positive, sincere, real, and present energy I think I've ever experienced in a musician. Especially a musician that was performing outside of someone's living room. Really incredible. He really wants to represent and spread love. He encourages people to introduce themselves to someone new near them, to step outside of their comfort zone, to embrace their inner child/silliness, and reminds them that the only person that can box themselves in... is themselves. Something else that I enjoyed is that he encouraged people to dance/sing no matter if they knew the words. Which also prompted people to pay attention in a way to what he was saying because he was making it up as he was going as well. Which he caught people off guard a few times by improving/freestyling his own lyrics just to remind people that music nor life is a script. The man is truly an inspiration.
An amazing guitarist, performing artist, vocalist (opera?), gentleman, and friend to those near him. I've no doubt his life has been a long hard journey with its ups and downs but if there was ever an artist that I would follow to drink of their energy and message... it would be him. If there were ever an artist that I were to aspire to be like in capacity and integrity, it would also be him. I am officially amazed & humbled.
His lyrics can go by so quickly and are yet so profound that I find that I only hear them apparently when I'm ready to. He sang his song "Love For A Child", and though I've heard it I can't tell you how many times before... apparently I never really HEARD it until I was standing there watching him in person. He sung about my childhood and growing up with such emotion that it struck a chord inside me that I hadn't had plucked in a long time. Impressive. Impressive on so many levels. That he was able to reach that level, that I hadn't really heard the lyrics before, that he sang with such emotion and conviction like he had just written the song that very evening, and so much more that words can't express.
We also had impressively close seats. So that helped the experience all the more. For the Rose Quarter we were only two levels up and just off to the side of the stage (row M for seats 3 & 4 for those who know the Rose Quarter). For his Encore he surprised everyone and set up a mini stage at the back end of the basketball court (the opposite end from the stage) where it was just him, his hand percussionist, and his bassist and the crowd swarmed in around him where they played another 3 or so songs. Brave soul he is. Then still after that he went BACK ON STAGE and did a COUPLE MORE songs. The man has endurance for sure!
I know most of you will be amazed to hear it come out of my mouth (or fingers as it were) but it is official.... This show now tops the list of all time favorite shows seen. Even tops Depeche Mode. *gasp*! I know! But truly was incredible.
Bravo
