I was so utterly impressed and moved by the Phonetic Contest this year! You wouldn’t believe how many talented outgoing and brave people we have got for students! They were so creative too. It is unbelievable but I think I can remember every individual performance out of about 25. Each of them was unique and personal.
I used to think that English poetry is dull for lack of rhyme and harmony. It turns out that it depends on how you perform it.
There were all sorts of interpretations accompanying the poem itself ranging from live or recorded music to visual images both still and moving. Some students actually performed or acted out their poems, some offered Russian translations.
The choice of poetry was striking, too. We heard both English and American classics along with English translations from Visotskiy, Rojdestvenskiy, Pushkin.
The variety of nominations awarded today also reflect the enjoyability of the event.
