Happy Thanksgiving!

Nov 26, 2009 21:44

I've not been posting as much lateley as I'd like, so this is the catch-up post:

First, I hope you're all having a great holiday. Stuff yourselves with too much turkey, watch too much tv, and don't let your families drive you completely (or any further, as it may be with some of my FList) insane. Hope you all had a good Halloween too. I wanted to go out, but my costume didn't get here in time (I ordered it off Ebay), I was cramping bad, and it suddenly got really cold, plus I was broke, so I stayed in and watched horror films instead. Now I'm doing my x-mas shopping on eBay and plan to be done with my shoppping before Black Friday even begins.

Next, we're in escroe with the house. We're waiting on the title and some last minute paper work. The original date that my loan-person-thingy was hopping for was to have us in by Thanksgiving but that obviously didn't work out, so now we're shooting for sometime before Christmas. We'll see, is all I can say.

We've been given free rooms at work (in case any of you don't know/have forgotten, I work in the casino industry in Las Vegas)this month and next. I stayed at the Flamingo last week. Even though I didn't get an upgraded room it was still very nice. Nicer than I expected it to be. My friend Amanda also had a room, so we were wandering around the Strip at three am looking for cake *LOL* She also introduced me to tequilla. Turns out I like it. Yay! Then on Tuesday I stayed at the Paris in one of the new upgraded red rooms. Very pretty. The big screen tv was longer than my arms when streched out fingertip to fingertip. Unfortunately, I can't sleep in hotels usually, and last week I was up for 48 straight hours because of it and this week it was about 36 hours with no sleep. Other than that, it was fun to do the tourist thing for a while. I've got a free room at Caeser's Palace next month. Should be fun.

On a less plesant note, I'd like to remind everyone to take good care of themselves durring flu season. A friend of mine at work took his pregnant, 25 year old girlfriend to the hospital with a mild case of the flu and she was dead within two days. She'd never had health problems and should have been healthy and should have easily shaken the virus. I don't want to hear about that happening to any of you.

Other than that I've mostly been obsessed with Dragon Age: Origins lately. Lots of fun, and I like the companinons (some games make you travel with some real idiots) and the plot for the most part. Very pretty too. And, hey, you've got to love a game where you can initiate a bisexual four-way orgy with yourself, your romantic interest, and up to two others! *LOL* Guess they really wanted to justify the mature rating.

Oh, and I actually bought a cd yesterday. I always download music (sometimes legally, sometimes a little less so) these days, but I couldn't resist buying Adam Lambert's new cd. Such pretty pictures *LOL* Loved the cd, so I'm happy with the extra trip to Best Buy. Go get the cd guys! Seriously. Loved is AMA preformance too ;) Mom thought it was pretty fun also, which was cute/funny.

Before I head off to play the addictive minigames on FaceBook and kill some demon ass on DA:O I thought I'd get caught up on my recommended reading list for the past few months. I don't think I'll finish any more books before the month ends so I'll just do September - November:

As usual, bolded titles are highly recommended and the heart rating is out of five.

"Dance with the Devil" by Sherrily Kenyon ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ 1/2

Book four of the Dark-Hunter series.

I've done a run down of the series before, but if you need a refresher: the Greek goddess Artemis has a group of vampire-like beings, all mortals wronged in life driven to accept immortality rather than death, who fight to keep humanity safe from daimons. They give up their souls to gain the power needed to keep fighting their unnatural foes, but if they find ture love then they can sometimes regain their souls and go on to live the happily-ever-after lives that they (usually) never got to have when they were mortal.

This book picks up with Zarek where the last book left off, on his way back to exile in Alaska. Even though he's a grumpy, surley bastard in the previous book, you still can't help but pity a guy who's been stuck in the middle of nowhere for longer than America has been a country, only able to go outside of his shack for half of the year, alone and miserable because of something that he doesn't even remember doing.

The disaster that was his brief trip to civilization in the previous book leads Artemis to declare him mad and dangerous, and she orders Acheron, leader of the Dark-Hunters, to put him down. Acheron bargens for a reprive for his Hunter and instead a Judge, sister to the Fates, is sent to decide if Zarek will live or die. It's basically a romance series masquerading as a fantasy/vampire series, so you can guess where the story goes from there.

I found this to be the most enjoyable of the series thus far: funny, tragic, sweet, romantic and sexy. Definately worth a read, but if you haven't tried the series before I wouldn't recommend starting here either.

"Wildstorm: Armageddon" ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

I read this GN because it contains stories about my all time favorite comic, "The Authority". Midnighter and Apollo are my OTP *LOL* Basically, it's the beginning of the end-of-the-world/reboot storyline for all of the Wildstorm serieses, including "The Authority" and "Wildcats". If you're not a comic fan or are unfamiliar with these comics then this wouldn't be the book for you, but I loved it, even if it did get a bit too dark and depressing at some points.

"Fearless Fourteen" by Janet Evanovich ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

This is book fourteen of the Stephanie Plum series, books about New Jersey's worst/luckiest bounty hunter. These books are hillarious, and sometimes sweet and romantic as well. They're mostly humor with some mystery mixed in to give the plot somewhere to go. And they're also really well written, a lot of fun, and I'd highly recommend the whole series to anyone.

In book fourteen Stephanie is babysitting a weird goth teen while his mom tires to make bail, people are trying to dig up Joe Morelli's (Steph's cop boyfriend) backyard looking for burried treasure, Stephanie and Lula (former prostitute, file clerk, and sometimes assistant bounty hunter) are doing security for an aging pop star/diva as a favor to Ranger (who Steph still can't completely get over, even if she is in love with Joe), and Lula and Tank (Ranger's right hand man) might be engaged even if Tank can't remember poping the question. Pretty much more of the same for this series. Honestly, if I really thought being a bounty hunter was this much fun I think I'd be considering a change in professions. Read the book people. Now.

"The Darkest Kiss" by Keri Arthur ♥ ♥ ♥ 3/4

Book 6 of the Australlian werewolf series, Riley Jensen: Guardian. As I've said before, it's basically an Anita Blake-type series where vamps and shifters are real and living in the open. The Guradians are the ones tasked with keeping the non-humans in line, and the half werewolf-half vampire Riley has become an unwilling member of their ranks, right along side her twin brother.

In this book a shapeshifting cat is on the rampage, avenging her mistress' death, hunting down society guys and gals, along with the tramps who make sport out of seducing the wealthy and elite. It wasn't the best or the worst of the series, but it was a lot of fun, at least for anyone who's familiar with the series. And, as a bonus, Riley finally gets back with Quinn, and surprise of all surprises: he's finally learned his lesson and is willing to stop being such an asshole! Yay!

"Sigil, Volume 2" ♥ ♥ ♥

A collection of short slash stories, mostly in the fantasy genre. I bought this book a long time ago, was bored stiff by the first story, and it's sat on my shelf ever since. I didn't have anything else to read, so I went back to it last month. Which is also the only way I'd recommend any of you give it a try. The stories weren't awful, but most of them were dull, overly wordy, and just so-so at best.

"Mister B Gone" by Clive Barker ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ 1/2

This was a short novel by the man who brought us "Hellraiser". It's basically a first person account of a demon named Jakabok Botch. Although it wasn't a literary masterpiece, I found it oddly sweet and at times moving, and althoug Jakabok is a rather evil demon with few redeaming qualities I still felt sorry for him by the end and really quite attached to the nasty little fellow. It was a fun read, and I'd actually highly recommend it, despite the fact that most of the reviews I've read claim that it's the worst of Barker's works.

"Sense & Sexuality" by You Higashino ♥ ♥ 2/4

Another unoriginal yaoi manga, this time about two wealthy best friends and their competitions to win the most desierable sexual conquests. The art was so-so, the stories so-so, the sex luke-warm, and the sweetly romantic ending was the only bit that was really worth the price of the book.

"On Bended Knee" by Ruri Jujikawa ♥ ♥ ♥ 1/2

This yaoi manga is about a wealthy company owner and his bodyguard. Can you all guess where this is going? The owner is in danger of being offed by rivals and the bodyguard feels his job is compromised because he's in love with his boss. I did like that the bodyguard was actually the smaller, cuter, uke though; nice twist. It was a sweet/romantic book, even if it wasn't really a standout title.

"Gaywyck" by Vincent Virga ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ 1/2

This was another book that bored me after the first chapter and ended up sitting on my shelf for over a year and a half until I had nothing left to read. I'm glad that I did pick it back up though, because it really was a very enjoyable read once I got past the slow opening.

Basically this book was described to me as a gay "Jane Eyre", and they were pretty well right. It's written in the period gothic style, so it gets a bit wordy and can drag a bit, but it's overall a sweet and interesting mystery/romance. There are quite a few good summaries/reviews on Amazon and other sites, so I'll let them speak for me. Just read the book. You'll love it.

"Heroes, Volume 1" ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

A graphic novel that fills in some stories inbetween episodes of the first season of the fantasy series "Heroes". A fun read for fans of the show, with art that is sometimes wonderfull and other times not at all to my taste, but it won't make much sense to anyone who's never seen the show. If you like comics and "Heroes", be sure to pick this one up sometime.
