Title: Apo Pantos Kakodaimonos - 2
Pairing: OnTae
Genre: Romance/Supernatural/Slight Angst
Rating: PG-13 for slight violence
Summary: Onew was cursed to forever walk between Hell and Earth as a demon, lonely and unfeeling. He had no memory of why he was cursed, nor what the curse truly meant. All he knew was that bad things seemed to happen to everyone around him, including a certain human named Taemin that had a perverse attraction to his demonic nature. Demons are cursed to never feel any emotion, though, so matter how much Taemin loved him, he could never reciprocate the feeling, and no matter how much danger Taemin was put in, Onew could feel nothing whenever the human was on the verge of death. Or at least, that's what he thought.

[Excerpt] I continued walking around in Hell.  The ashes of burned-out fires crinkled under my feet, along with the snap of rotted bones.  A haze of smoke settled around me and in my lungs.  Occasionally, a piercing scream echoed through the cavernous depths.  As I lost myself in the monotonous darkness, I felt my mind slip away into random thoughts.  The grey smoke seemed to swirl around me, and in it, I saw...

I felt something wrap itself around my wrists and ankles and squeeze tightly.  The chain-like bounds dragged me down further and further, the speed of my fall increasing with every second.  An immense pressure started to build around me and press on my chest.  It became harder to breathe in the heavy air, and it became harder to see in the pitch black darkness.  Uninvited thoughts strayed into my mind of depression, regret, violence, and death, and they latched onto those thoughts already in my mind and brought them to the front of my consciousness.

I struggled against the thoughts to prevent them from taking over my mind.  I struggled to take in one breath of air.  I struggled to adjust my eyes to the darkness.

This was the path to Hell.

Just when I thought I couldn’t handle anymore, my feet landed, and the bounds on my limbs retracted back into the shadows.  I rubbed my wrists in an attempt to soothe the irritated skin.  I had to go through that process every day, but it never got any easier or any less horrible.

As my eyes began to adjust to the darkness, I started making my way forward.  With each step, I began to hear the sound of lost souls screaming and demons screeching and fire crackling everywhere.  The strident sounds pierced my ears and made me cringe.  As I passed by where all the lost souls were gathered, I saw them all shrink away from my demonic aura.  They stayed in the purgatory-like section until they became demons, and only the devil himself could do that.  Until then, they were just a racket, always crying and moaning over the termination of their pathetic lives.

Past the lost souls was where the demons took their residence.  A lot of them were taunting the lost souls and scaring them away; some were even mentally torturing them with gruesome tales of the devil and his workings.  Other demons seemed to get a thrill out of messing with the lost souls, but I found it unnecessarily cruel.  They were already subjected to an eternity of pain and suffering without being tormented by demons.

As I passed by the other demons, they all got quiet and stared at me with their disgusting yellow eyes.  A few snarled lowly, but most just looked at me hungrily.  Not even one approached me.

I encountered this every time: I didn’t belong on Earth, and I didn’t belong in Hell, either.  Both demons and humans scorned me.  But maybe that was part of my curse: the loneliness that set in my heart and never went away.  The worst part of it was that when I was in Hell, the feeling was intensified.  That’s what Hell did.  It found your weakness and exploited it.

But time moved faster in Hell.  It was that way because it played with people’s minds.  After souls were tortured and turned to demons, they were allowed one glimpse of the Earth they once knew.  When they saw that everyone they knew died and they themselves were forgotten, it hurt them to no end.  And the devil smiled at their pain.

But because time moved faster in Hell, that meant I was able to go to Earth sooner and escape this oppressive atmosphere that I despise.  Even though it was just as lonely on Earth.

I continued walking around in Hell. The grey smoke seemed to swirl around me, and in it, I saw...

...the neighborhood on Earth I’d just visited.  Except it wasn’t destroyed.  The houses stood tall, with brightly colored walls and vibrant green grass.  There were no cracks in the road.  The trees and flowers were alive and blooming.  People were there, smiling and laughing.  The sun felt warm...

...and then immediately got sucked into the darkness of Hell.  The image disappeared, and I was alone again in the smoke and ashes, confused over what I’d just seen.  Was it a dream?  But I never slept.  Was it a vision?  I’d never had one before.  Whatever it was, it had felt...different.  Not lonely or painful.  What was that feeling called?  I’d read about it somewhere.

But I was a cursed demon.  I wasn’t supposed to feel anything except crippling loneliness and guilt over something I couldn’t even remember.  At least, that’s what I heard.  Maybe these visions were a new way to torture me; to have me see what my life would be like if I wasn’t a cursed demon but have the feelings be forever unreachable.  It was just another form of punishment for me.

Suddenly, a feather-light touch fluttered down my body.  I looked at the black wisp as it curled around my fingers.  More and more of them appeared, and soon I was covered from head to toe in the swirling shadows that hissed and twisted all over my body.

It was time to go back to Earth.

I thought about the image I’d seen in the smoke as I disappeared within the shadow.  I wondered if I’d ever get to see that place again, or if I would be sent to the next random destination Hell had in store for me.
