Characters: Shino and Neji
Setting: Thieves Camp, the morning after Neji and Sasuke's meeting
Rating: PG, tops.
Warnings: None.
Summary: Neji returns to the camp. Shino is peeved. Neji explains himself. Then, he goes to sleep.

The night had been a long one for Neji, but not one without entertainment. The mysterious traveler had turned out to be as cunning and clever as ever he was, just like the Hyuuga had suspected. Neji had followed him all through the night, gaining more and more information on the boy as they played this game of theirs. All through the time though, unbeknownst to the boy, Neji had the upper hand. In essence, he had never been ‘following’ him; had had been leading him exactly where he wanted the man to go.

With the sun rising in the east, Neji had to do some fancy thinking to get the traveler to stop for the night, but eventually, with the Hyuuga staying in place, that’s exactly what the traveler did too. He gathered his things and made camp. Though, whether or not he was actually sleeping could be questioned, as Neji was almost a hundred percent sure that he was not.

Maybe the traveler was smarter than he let on.

Either way, the traveler’s makeshift camp ended up being within forty feet of the Rebellion Camp; exactly what Neji had intended. The sky was starting to turn a stunning shade of pink as the night gave way to the dawn, and Neji’s feet flew out beneath him as he ran back toward the camp, the pressure on his eyes unrelenting as he kept his eyes on the stranger. He could not lose sight of him just in case.

However, he needed to check in with his team before he pronounced dead or a search party was sent out, which he had no doubt that Lee would do at the first chance. Any chance to gain a heroic tale, he thought… Of course, Lee was the least of his worries. Silent as always, Neji entered the camp that had still not yet to stir except for the lone figure sitting on the makeshift watch post for the night.

Neji slowed a stop before the figure. Even with the shades hiding his eyes and the cloak covering half of his face, the Hyuuga could make out the Aburame’s expression clearly. He was not happy. Neji suspected it had to deal a little with his disappearance the night before and reappearance just now. He had missed his watch hour; he had returned almost to the point where they would start packing up again to leave.

Back in the forest, the mysterious traveler “slept” soundly.

The Aburame's scowl only darkened as Neji approached. One would only notice it, however, if they were around him enough. To various members of the Rebellion, he looked the same as always.

Jumped down from the rock atop which he had perched, Shino walked toward the stationary Hyuuga.

"Where have you been?"

That being all he had the patience to say, Shino let his lips fall shut again, effectively silencing any noise. As he watched Neji with careful, although slightly miffed eyes, the Aburame tried to predict what the flying hell the Hyuuga could've been up to that was more important than guard watch. This was their life, after all, and if Shino hadn't already been awake (accursed insomnia, you bitch in a wench's getup), then their camp would've been totally unguarded against any attack. He wanted to shiver at the mere idea, but his cool façade kept him from doing so. Instead, he waited stoically for the other's response.

Neji’s own eyes, starting to burn slightly from the strain he was putting them through though he ignored that, narrowed slightly at the Aburame. His approach did not make the Hyuuga worry or fear for his place like it was supposed to; he was not afraid of Shino (nor would he ever be), but he could respect him. That still did not mean that he would back down to him, though.

“Out. Training.”

Even though he had returned to the camp to report back in, the Aburame’s attitude did not make him feel any more talkative than he ever was. He did not waver under Shino’s stare, even though he could see his eyes clearly behind the sunglasses, and kept a calm, dry look on his face. Usually, the two of them got along pretty well. They were both quiet and tended to be a little more logical than their teammates; however, because they both had stubborn natures, they sometimes butt heads then again, too.

“But then I got interrupted by a man. A traveler. He was headed in this direction. I stopped him.”

And that took all night. It was not quite that simple but details were only needed if they were asked for.

Shino raised an eyebrow in response. He knew of people getting so caught up in their training that they blew off guard duty, but it had never happened in his team. Not on his time. Lee had done it once, and he had already apologized profusely. Shino had forgone punishing him just to get the kid out of his office. Honestly, two and a half hours of, "Shino-san! Please forgive me! I shall do fifty cartwheels from the camp to Konoha's gates if I must to punish myself! It is a promise!" was really tiring on the ears.

Still, it wasn't like Neji to blow off guard duty. Obviously, something else happened to detain him for so long. It wasn't Shino's style to repeat questions, even though a swift, "Where the hell were you?" would do. He instead pinned Neji with a hopefully slightly formidable glare, even though he knew Neji wouldn't cower under the power of The Eyebrow like most did.

Neji could tell when Shino was getting a little impatient, but a night without any sleep at all had left the Hyuuga not really caring. He was a little out of it, and his eyes were starting to burn something awful against his eyelids, but he knew how to ignore pain, so he did. He just hoped there was no permanent damage afterward. He had never really held the spell for that long before, and he never knew how much pain it could cause him till now. He kept his face calm, though, attempting to ignore it to the best of his ability.

“He would not give me his name or his business,” he elaborated at Shino’s raised eyebrow. “He was-is suspicious. I don’t trust him, so I was keeping an eye on him. I still am.”

Shino nodded. He could see the strain the Hyuuga was under. It came of years of being on the same team. Although he'd never experienced it firsthand, he knew what the minor twitches in Neji's demeanor meant.

"How far away is he?"

This 'traveler,' as Neji had put it, was obviously something to worry about if the Hyuuga prodigy was straining so much to keep an eye on him. Shino wondered how he could get the pale-eyed boy to let up on the Byakugan. Neji probably wouldn't let up until he was sure that the kid in the forest was under firm watch for treachery.

"Don't worry. I'll send back to the base for scouts. You can let your Byakugan up for the moment, and I'll keep watch for anything suspicious. Go rest."

Whatever energy Neji had started out with upon returning to the camp was quickly deteriorating, leaving him exhausted. He could feel his limbs starting to feel heavy and it was not until now, that he realized that the pain in his eyes had traveled to the rest of his head, leaving a headache in its wake. Despite it all, he forced himself to keep a straight, calm face. It would do no good to fall apart now.

“He’s about forty feet east of here. He should be asleep-or at least resting for the moment. And… thank you.”

The thanks were half-hearted and said almost as an afterthought. He walked toward the mats quickly lain out in the clearing, and with as much as he could manage with almost all energy gone, lied down on the closest one. He had never tried to strain his eyes for so long, and so he had not expected sleep to claim him so quickly as it did upon the moment his head hit the pillow.

Shino nodded and half-watched Neji collapse onto a mat (his, he dimly noticed, but he had no need of it. There were scouts to dispatch and insects to speak with). Although he'd told Neji that he'd send back for scouts, he felt no need to tell the Hyuuga kid that he was actually sending a few search insects to keep guard over the traveller.

He held up four fingers, almost as if he was inspecting them, and watched calmly as a nimble insect clambered out of the tip each of finger. They ruffled their wings and turned to him, rubbing their legs together in a silent request for orders.

"There's a suspicious figure forty feet to the east of here. Surround and keep an eye on him, please. Report back if he moves."

The insects buzzed excitedly and took off, heading east at speeds nigh unimaginable. They would be upon the traveller in mere seconds.

Shino turned to head back to the camp, about ready to assign Lee guard duty and get in touch with the various scouts he'd placed around the camp. If there were suspicious persons so close as forty feet, then it couldn't hurt to make sure that there were no other questionable activities nearly as close.
