Characters: Leader and Itachi.
Setting: A random study room of Leader's. No, no sex this time.
Rating: G.
Warnings: None really.
Summary: Itachi delivers the report on the mission to Sir Leader, and ends up handing over more information than Leader had expected. Plans are made.
Date: 08 February 18AR, sometime before the Akatsuki meeting.
In the silence of the hallway, Itachi made his way to the abrupt ending, the high stained glass windows glittering by the dull sunlight outside, lighting the array of colored carpeted floors beneath his feet. A part of him was mentally running over everything that Shukaku had said to him back in Suna, pulling meanings from the context so as to be sure that he was completely solid on the arrangement. Everything seemed fine, but he knew quite well the tricks of deceiving.
When he at last reached the sought destination, Itachi’s pace slowed to a stop, and he inspected the surface of the heavy oak door before him, the wood distinct with perfected age and craftsmanship. A study room. After a moment, his hand lifted up, and he knocked only twice, awaiting a response from the other side of the door.
It was time to relay everything to Leader, time to see what the Akatsuki and the King himself could derive out of the demon he’d discovered. Because power was always the key, and always had been.
In all honesty, he had expected their journey to Suna to be much shorter than it had seemed to be. Something had probably happened that had delayed them and if that was the case, he was interested in knowing what it was.
The knock on the door brought him out of his thoughts. He stood up, shut the book he had been thumbing through, and went to the door.
Upon opening it, he nodded silently to Itachi and moved aside to let him in.
While Itachi was loyal to Leader, he still wasn't quite relaxed around the man; there was obviously some reason he'd made it to such a high rank, and with many followers of rather incredible capabilities. Itachi knew each member had talents, otherwise they wouldn't even be here, and was quite sure not one of them was to be reckoned with. So it had to have been a feat to get where the man was now.
And because of this, Itachi watched where he tread, pacing to the other end of the small study. He'd never been in actual one-on-one combat with Leader, so the man was still practically a mystery to him. Incisive red eyes scanned over the bindings of the many books that spanned the length of the walls, reading titles and pausing to work through the ones written in foreign languages, simply lapsing his time before he was admitted to speak up.
It was dark and shadowed in here, but Itachi could see well enough by the light of a single lamp set by a cluttered desk.
He gave Itachi a slightly inquisitive glance. "What is it you want to speak with me about?" he asked.
Itachi had a habit of being stoic but in this case it just made him seem hesitant. A characteristic like that was not something that was tolerated in the Akatsuki, no matter the circumstance.
Though he, himself, was interested in what Itachi had to say, he was hardly going to wait much longer; he had little patience for such things.
"I have the report for our mission to the Suna Kingdom. As well, I come with a bit of a discovery that I made during my stay at the palace. Whichever you would prefer first, Sir."
He wasn't hesitant, only polite when in the presence of the man he pretty much worked for and beneath. But it had been decided that he would relay the report to the man, seeing as if Hidan did, it probably wouldn't go by quite as smoothly as it could have had the Uchiha conveyed it. The mission had been a success, so there was no disappointing news to be broken, which was a good thing in itself.
Turning back around, Itachi bent his head slightly in a formal show of acknowledgement, not moving to take a seat as he was just fine with simply standing here. He didn't think the brief meeting would take long.
"Did the mission go as planned?" he asked.
This "discovery" of Itachi's intrigued him but it was something that he would address once he knew that this mission had not been a waste of time.
Itachi was one of the more reliable members. Hidan was not. He supposed it could go either way.
Nodding respectively to the question, Itachi kept his eyes level with that of Leader's, not tearing them away (for that was a sign of submission). He was loyal, but not out of fear and control, to most extents at least. His shielded gaze remained even simply to show that he could hold his own ground, to show that he did not cower pathetically in fear. He knew very well that Leader was quite capable to disband him from Akatsuki with merely an order, and while that wasn't the end of the world to him, knew that there would be a catch. There was always a catch.
And so he stayed faithful, bound in by what was already started and what he knew would probably become.
"It did, and very well at that. We were granted four troops with little qualm and mishap."
"Good," he said. Honestly, he'd had low expectations. Sending Hidan along anywhere usually meant things would not go well.
His patience for Hidan was growing thin.
"I will give them further instructions later...Now...What is this discovery of yours?"
He took a moment to reply, piecing together the words in his head before actually speaking them, preparing the information. "A demon inhabits the body and mind of the Queen's youngest brother. I've met with him."
Nothing was offered along with this, though Itachi had one more thing on his mind, about his and Hidan's brief run-in with a woman of great power. But for now, he wouldn't bring it up. They knew too little of the woman, too little to bring it into Leader's awareness. Perhaps he was foolish to keep it out of the conversation, but Shukaku was enough to keep Leader preoccupied with for now. Besides, she might just turn out to be a wasted cause, and he had every belief that Gaara would not be.
They could use the demon known as Shukaku. The woman, however, was too vigilant to consider.
A demon?
He had heard of such practices but that was something that had supposedly died out a very long time ago.
"What sort of powers does this demon have?"
If it was strong enough to have to be sealed in a human body, he had a feeling that such a creature could be useful for the Akatsuki...
Itachi had done well to discover this; he was never one to disappoint.
Casting a look off to the side, Itachi dug for the appropriate way to respond to Leader’s question. It was hard to tell what kind of ‘powers’ Shukaku possessed, besides the basic strength he very evidently wielded.
“The most obvious would be Black Magic, I believe, but a weak mind, at least against my own. Other than that, I had little time to consider.”
And he did have hardly the time to waste testing Shukaku’s capabilities. It would be best for Leader just to assess the demon once they finally had him.
“We have made an agreement, as well.”
It wouldn’t do any good to keep Sir Leader out of that one, either; he’d have to give Itachi the permission to leave for Suna again, after all.
"What sort of agreement?" he asked. No matter what this 'agreement' was, he wanted Itachi to retrieve this demon. Something like that could be very useful to the Akatsuki…and he knew that if he sent Itachi on a mission like that, he would not be disappointed.
He knew that Itachi would be willing to do as he instructed; he always was. Itachi was not one to question him.
Itachi nodded absently, eyes flashing something vindictive. This was the part he had been waiting to tell, the part where he had bought them a promise of supremacy, something he knew Leader would value. “In return for my services of transporting him across the borders of Suna, we will obtain what powers he has to offer us. A fair trade, if I do say so myself.” He smirked. “Although not so fair in the eyes of those deceiving, but it works.”
He paused for a beat, before going on, “When would you like me to retrieve him? I will go as soon as you order it, Sir.”
"I have some things that the entire Akatsuki needs to hear," he replied, "But after that, you are to go straight to Suna."
This was a chance that they could not pass up. The others would not need to know the details about Itachi's mission until after it was completed. The rest of the Akatsuki would just get in the way.
A thought occurred to him, and Itachi’s lips set into a fine line as he voiced the notion. “Am I to go…alone?” The time prior it had been Hidan, and while the two of them weren’t exactly on the best of terms, the man was a well-to-do partner. If not Hidan, he had expected to be paired up with Kisame, which was something more likely, but he honestly didn’t see Suna to be within the man’s favors.
“If it is what you wish, then I shall.”
"Yes, I want you to go on your own," he replied, "The others do not need to know about this mission just yet. They will only hinder you."
The other members were capable of acting on their own, but he knew that Itachi would be able to handle this alone. He had already proven himself.
Itachi shook his head from side to side briefly, a look of amusement crossing his features at his Leader’s off-hand and possibly unintended praise. “You flatter me, Sir,” he said, moving to bow somewhat in a show of manner. He knew that while the others might deter him on this mission alone, there was not a single one of them that was lower in standard than himself, and that was exactly why Leader had chosen them, after all. Hand-picked, and more or less the best.
“Now if you will excuse me, Sir, it is best I go on and await further instructions within the conference, which undoubtedly should not be too long from now. You have my gratitude.” A simple nod, and he moved to the door, pulling it open without another word.
He gave Itachi a final, affirmative nod as he watched him retreat. Itachi would complete the mission in an efficient manner, just as he always did. There was no point in sending along another member, when they all had other things that needed to be tended to...
