And more installs

Edirol UM-1 USB/MIDI interface,
Celemony Melodyne,
ATT/McAfee Antivirus,
Acid Music 6,
ASIO4ALL

I haven't verified that the UM-1 works yet because I haven't had the laptop down in the studio yet. This was another case of go-to-the-web-site and download an update. Since it's a hardware driver, they just give it away, the polar opposite of...

Melodyne, which is a high-class pitch manipulator, gave me a scare. Again, couldn't find the serial number / key at first, but went to the history pile in Hotmail again and found it. Installation involved some back and forth with the mother ship, which revealed I already had "one of two activations in use on computer ___." The old laptop. The one from which I had already uninstalled Melodyne. Yikes. Hadn't thought of that. Fortunately, I was able to reinstall it on the old machine, de-activate it, and uninstall it, leaving me now with one of two activations in use on my new machine.

I used to use Grisoft AVG anti-virus when it was free, but it isn't any more. My brother-in-law suggested I check out my ISP's offerings, and hey, ATT is handing out McAfee for free to its subscribers! Thanks for the tip, dude!

Acid was the gateway drug software for my music habit. Version 2, that is. I upgraded to 6 a few years ago, and while I don't use it much anymore, what the heck - I have 100GB free on this machine. [edit: make that 95] More rooting around for the key (on paper this time) - I can't believe how disorganized I was on this stuff. Then downloading the update which was even bigger than the original installer. But it works just fine, thank you.

Finally, ASIO4ALL, a freeware ASIO driver. Went straight to the web site for that one, no sense installing any older version. Just tested it on SONAR, and it works. Haven't tried anything live yet, so can't report on latency. This audio hardware (IDT?) seems a lot better than the crap on the old laptop. Of course, in the studio I use the Edirol UA-4FX USB audio interface. I already downloaded the latest driver for that, but need to go down to the studio to install and test it. Maybe tomorrow.
