Other Characters: Data, The Seventh Doctor, Agent K
Character Name: Gaheris Rhade
Series: Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda
Age: 32
From When?: As he died at Dylan's hands in his original timeline (rather than the alternate created by Trance).
Inmate/Warden: Rhade is another close call, but an inmate because his ambition exceeded his view to the future. He thought that he (and the other Nietzscheans that he collaborated with) were weaker working in collaboration, and betrayed his friend. His intentions were noble, but his thinking was misguided. This should be relatively easy to show him.
Now a warden, he's still very close to what he was as an inmate, but with a greater understanding of the mistakes he made. He'll be a good warden though, as he was a competant advisor, tactical officer, and was willing to risk his life to protect people (despite this seeming to go against his individualist attitude). He will very deeply analyze his inmate, no matter how secretive they are, and not take what they say at face value. He'll be very good for the scientific/military/engineered types.
Abilities/Powers: Rhade is much stronger and faster than normal humans, and can think more quickly. He's immune to some poisons such as aconite, ammonia, antipyrine, arsenic, atrophine, camphor, hydrocyanic acid, iodine, lead, picrotoxin, and strychnine, and can breathe chlorine gas for longer than a human could. He's resistant to diphtheria, hepatitis, the flu, measles, meningitis, mumps, pertussis, lyme, polio, rabies, rubella, tetanus, and varicella. He's a keen strategist and a competent officer when it suits him. He can survive longer in a slightly harsher environment, he is however not indestructible and can succumb to the same environmental extremes that humans can after prolonged exposure.
He would normally have bone-blades jutting from his forearms like most Homo Sapiens Invictis, however I would bring him in without them. He could get them back as his warden would deem fit. Like antlers, the bones can grow back if they're removed (even if it's painful)
Personality: As with all Nietzscheans, Rhade's beliefs stem primarily out of self-interest. He values survival, not just his own survival but the survival of his genes, over all else. He's formed his own morality to greater benefit himself, but it also gives him room to assist his associates when it might be valuable to him to do so. His Pride and wives and children inevitably come first. He faces all obstacles and challenges with the intention of bettering himself so that he might be a suitable husband and father.
He views himself as simply a vessel for a woman's ability to reproduce a superior child. While Nietzscheans have polygamy and Prides, a woman chooses her mate and has the option to reject a child if she finds her mate inferior. It's a very matriarchal society and often the matriarch of the Pride has to approve a coupling before it can come to pass. Because of this, he will always regard women with reverence, and unlike some later Nietzscheans isn't so committed to the Nietzschean race that he won't consider mating outside of his subspecies. Superior genes are superior genes.
Rhade personally, while saying that he was a realist as most Nietzscheans are meant to be, was more of a cynic. He often suspected the worst of people and himself, but still saw this as realism rather than pessimism. He was committed and earnest to his duties as an officer as another means to prove himself, even when he betrayed his Captain and friend. His intentions were good, his means were extremely misguided.
Rhade has a strange habit of presenting Dylan with his plans as a warning, such as telling the Captain to take him to the brig because he couldn't trust him, or during go warning him how many moves it would take before he won. It would seem that it wasn't in his best interest to do this, and he wouldn't warn any other person that he came up against before he attacked them. It's almost a bizarre way of showing respect and affection. That he wants someone to remain a challenge in order to keep their relationship interesting and stimulating, so he provides them with tactical advantages.
This is even evident in how earnest he was in maintaining the crew drills. He was very strict and very adamant about them being able to efficiently perform their duties. When they couldn't, he pressed them harder until they could make the time he required. He wanted them to be competent against the Nietzschean fleet they were going against, and to be efficient game pieces for Dylan to use during the battle even if Gaheris would be his enemy. So in the end, when he said that he was proud of him, he really meant it. If there was anyone that he would be fine with besting him, it would have been Dylan Hunt as he respected the man's consistent dedication to his own moral code and strength to enforce it, even if he occasionally found his judgement inadvisable.
Aboard the Barge, he will initially be angry about the loss of his bone blades but will immediately see his position as an inmate as an opportunity to improve himself. This will be further motivated by the presence of another Nietzschean. There will always be the need to prove himself superior. Rhade will also hate Vampires as they'll remind him of the Magog, feasting on sentient beings and reproducing frequently against the will of a victim being a point of disgust for him. The Borg would be viewed similarly. He probably will be fine with humans, and Time Lords and Vulcans will be curiosities as will any members of Starfleet as they'll remind him of Commonwealth officers.
He will, of course, be very polite with women as he is societally inclined to do. He will miss his wives but once it's confirmed that he has a genetic reincarnation, he'll be far less distressed about them and glad that they survived. He will be very unhappy with the outcome of the Nietzschean war and the overthrow of the Commonwealth. He will be terse and outspoken, and thorough and serious. He will be helpful as he needs to be, because it will be beneficial to him.
Path to Redemption: His Path to Redemption should be a relatively easy one if done properly. Gaheris's intention in sabotaging the Andromeda and betraying Captain Hunt wasn't based in ill will. It was selfish on the behalf of his people and their longevity, feeling that the Commonwealth was holding them back and that the only way that his people wouldn't be weakened and exposed for attack by the Magog was if he stopped the Commonwealth from forming any alliances with them. What he didn't know was the Jaguar Pride would use the civil war to overthrow the weakened Drago-Kazov Pride (the ones that broached the plan in the first place).
He also didn't know that the trusted remains of progenitor Drago Museveni would become a point of contention in the tribes rather than a unifying agent. He did see unity between them, especially in the face of potential Magog invasion, and joint survival of supreme importance. It should be easy (with some coaxing) to point out despite ideological differences tactically the Commonwealth could have been of some advantage. He needs to learn that strength in numbers also benefits strength as an individual, and that he impulsively ignored tactical advantages because he allowed his xenophobia get the better of him. While his family survived, he still put them all at risk for a plan that did far more damage than good.
Idealists are fine as a warden so long as that warden has the strength to back up those ideals and the track record to do so. Also it's important that they don't completely undermine his beliefs and make a mockery of his life as a Nietzschean, insisting that all of his ways are wrong on a racial level. Returning his bone blades at some point shouldn't be a huge problem, because even without them he's an inmate that shouldn't be left to his own devices or long periods of time without interaction. He's going to need to develop an attachment before he respects them so an active warden would be best. It would probably also be best for it to be male, so his first inclination wouldn't be to try and impress a woman a her prospective mate.
More bad ideas; berating him as an idiot or a traitor. Slowly bringing him around to the idea that he cared for Dylan as a member of his Pride and not just a captain would be a much better way to approach his betrayal. Encouraging attachments to others (not just strong women) will go a long way to making him realize how valuable those interpersonal bonds with non-mates and children are.
NEW PATH TO REDEMPTION:
It's not that Rhade does bad things for good reasons, it's that sometimes he convinces himself that they're good reasons when they were actually bad ones. He's slowly near the realization (after several discussions with the Doctor) that he might have not been as completely selfless as he thought he convinced himself he had been in fighting Dylan aboard the Andromeda. He wanted him to listen to him, and he was glad when he was intelligent enough to win the fight, but he was infuriated that Dylan dismissed so much of what he said when he was trying to express anger about how much a threat he thought the Magog were, and later trying to warn him about the Nietzschean attack.
He also solicited Harper's help in destroying a Nietzschean fleet at a major battle in a war. This resulted in the deaths of at least 800,000 Nietzscheans. He's both convinced himself that they deserved it so that he could live with the fact that he had to do it. After hearing all the horror stories about genetic manipulation, he's trying to believe that he- and his people, aren't inherently evil. He's been showing interest in the
Augments from the Trekverse, and he's feels very strongly that they shouldn't all have been exiled. Some might have grown into productive members of society, despite their ambition. Someone who can point out that those other Nietzscheans might have still have done some good might make him realize he was wrong there.
He has realized that not all Magog and Vampires are evil, and a good many of them can restrain themselves. But he also has huge issues involving permission. He hates anyone that would use someone's physical/mental means for their own ends. He can forgive later and recognize people have changed, which is definite progress. But as it is, people that eat sentient beings or rape really infuriate him and he still needs to see many of these people can change and he doesn't have to lash out to protect his friends and his loved ones.
His file now includes a full history. Some problems he'll be blunt about. Others he'll express in leading questions or choices of philosophical thought, so someone that can catch those will definitely be good. Someone who enjoys games will be great, as he considers those a bonding experience and the way people should get to know one another accurately. His favorites are Go, Chess, and basketball. He's open to others, though. He's slightly bitter over wardens having the choice to come, but also likes a number of wardens. He will get into self-destructive cycles because he gets angry at himself, and Una pointed out that he's lost his sense of self-preservation. He's developed some very real affection for some of the people on the Barge.
IN SHORT TO ALL THIS:
*He's an alien/modified future human. He's proud of this. It's not what needs fixed.
*Teach him some anger management.
*Play games with him and ask him questions that make him think.
*He's a soldier, and responds well to military or survivalist folk.
*He's a parent and he really did want to make a better world for his kids.
*I would like a test thread before sorting him.
History: Gaheris Rhade was born on the Enkidu colony to Morgause of the Majorum Pride by Lot. He was raised well and received a formal education, and like most Nietzscheans was considered an adult by the time he hit puberty. He took his first wife soon after and went to the All-Systems University. He became a member of Argosy Special Operations soon afterward, and during the time between joining and his final Ops mission collected his other two wives.
Rhade (code-named Mr. March) first met Dylan Hunt (Mr. April) on a mission from Admiral Stark as a part of Argosy Special Operations to bring the dictator President Ferrin to stand trial for his crimes against personal freedom and to allow democratic elections. Rhade wanted to kill Ferrin, insisting throughout the mission that the efficient way to go about it was assassination. Dylan said that he wanted Ferrin to live and came up with every excuse to avoid killing him. In the end, President Ferrin attempted to shoot them the moment they entered his office, and Rhade killed him defensively. He helped an injured Dylan escape the facility and planet, received commendation and became the first officer aboard the warship Andromeda.
Rhade served under Dylan Hunt and the two began to regularly play go together, and became fast friends. It was during his service that the first Magog attack on Brandenburg Tor occurred, and the Andromeda was used to ferry victims away from the planet. Over 3 billion people died over a matter of days and Rhade bore firsthand witness to the devastation.
During this time caught wind of the first signs of revolt among the Nietzscheans, but Rhade at first refused to help the insurrection as he felt the Nietzscheans stood a better chance with Commonwealth resources. The first speech given by the Than Triumvir Spring Rivers Flowing insinuated that there would be countermeasures by the Commonwealth.
But then the Treaty of Antares was signed. The Nietzscheans felt the treaty was an insufficiently aggressive response to the Magog invasion, as many frontier dwelling Nietzscheans lost their worlds during the invasion and the agreement would allow the Magog to keep these Nietzschean settled worlds (even though the Magog had long since ruined them). Rhade decided to help with the revolt though his role would probably mean his death. He believed he would be helping his people continue on, that his children would be safe and the Nietzscheans would see a glorious victory. He found the Magog reprehensible and a scourge upon the face of they universe and hated that they lived off sentient beings and reproduced through rape (like wasps, using a host sentient to inject their larvae into and they would later erupt and devour the host completely). He began to conspire against his friend for the good of the Nietzschean people and as he thought the good of all the unified worlds. He saw the Commonwealth as weak and coddling, that the Magog should die and the Commonwealth should be destroyed before they would consider collaborating with them. Still, He didn't inform his wives of the treachery, wanting them to remain unaccountable.
He sabotaged the Andromeda, and during an emergency with a black hole the Commonwealth ordered an evacuation of a nearby planet in the Hephaistos System. The Nietzscheans set up an ambush, and he directed Dylan to send him to the brig because he couldn't trust him. Once the ship-wide evacuation began and he knew that his family had escaped, he resisted the officers escorting him and he returned to the bridge and shot Refractions of Dawn, and Dylan his reasoning as he fought, purposefully giving Dylan the edge yet again. Hunt beat him in the fight, and he died saying "I'm proud of you."
After canon update and begin alternate timeline:
He sabotaged the Andromeda, as before, but when he returned to the bridge where he shot Refractions of Dawn, the Than Pilot, and then killed Dylan Hunt.
The Hephaestos System was chosen for the first Nietzschean battle because of the rogue black hole that was nearing it making a good excuse for an emergency beacon. The Andromeda neared it, and her artificial gravity caused a time dilation aboard the ship as it approached the event horizon. The ship became trapped at the edge, and Rhade was delivering Dylan's body to the Captain's quarters to lay in temporary rest when the final time dilation occurred, keeping him in stasis for 300 years.
The crew of the Eureka Maru claimed the Andromeda for salvage. Guilty over Dylan's death, he made an agreement with Andromeda that he would turn himself in if the ship that was rescuing them was from the Commonwealth, even though he knew the penalty for treason was death. When it wasn't, he killed the invaders that he found hostile or useless and used the others as crew to help him rebuild the Commonwealth. He had a hologram made of Dylan Hunt to play go with, but it ended up being his personal adviser.
Through a slipstream accident he became the Nietzschean Angel of Death, a mysterious force at the Battle of Witchhead that killed off much of the Nietzschean fleet sent to intercept the Commonwealth ships that were on their way to obliterate the Nietzschean homeworld. After discovering that he was the greatest single butcher of the Nietzschean people ever known, his attitude toward his own kind hardened considerably as he felt that his people had betrayed his confidence in them. He refused to allow Nietzscheans into his re-envisioned Commonwealth, and the Nietzscheans began to blackmail potential member worlds into not joining, or harass current ones into leaving.
He struck up a relationship with Beka Valentine, but after a particular stand-off with an infertile Nietzschean pilot that reminded her of herself, she decided that she couldn't be a part of the crew anymore and she left both him and the ship. Rhade also caught Tyr Anasazi with the remains of the progenitor on board. Knowing he was scheming to betray the ship and was using it as his own personal protection, he murdered Tyr.
After Harper was infested with Magog during their encounter with the Magog World Ship, he began work on a tesseract machine to remove the larvae without surgery by phasing them into a different portion of space. Beka returned to the ship to see Harper, but told Rhade she couldn't stay with him. When he activated the machine, it caused temporal rifts throughout the ship. Trance Gemini switched places with her future self and informed Rhade he needed to use the incident to transport himself back to the past because there was no way they were going to be able to stop the Magog. He tried to insist that he could do it, but she said there was no option. He kissed Beka good-by and returned to the past. There, he killed his alternate self and put on his uniform. History progressed as it was supposed to, Hunt beat him in the fight, and he still said "I'm proud of you," before dying.
Sample Journal Entry: [After having roamed out and doing a brief recon, he has returned to his cabin and found his journal. And looked back just enough to note that there are Nietzscheans, there are species that he doesn't know, and this is a ship that he shouldn't be on.
So you have a handsome looking man in a red-leather High Guard uniform on your screen. And he looks like he's about to bore a hole through it with his eyeballs. Considering that he was just dying at the hand of his best friend not long before, he's still feeling a little bit thrown. But he's not going to let it show.]
I believe after some evaluation I've concluded why I'm here. I could claim to be a warden, though the moment those claims were disputed I would find myself at a strategic disadvantage. I could also demand release, however I'm sure such demands would fall upon deaf ears and met with derision and amusement.
I am Gaheris Rhade, a Nietzschean, and I'm aboard this ship as an inmate. Now, what is it that I'm expected to do to get off of it?
Sample RP: There was a three-dimensional go board in his room, and Rhade slowly set up the pieces in their proper places. It was a strange way to think of Dylan, as a casual competitor, but in this strange new environment he would gladly take whatever comfort was available to him. Even reminders of that imbecilic idealist were proving beneficial.
He leaned back and steepled his fingers together, staring at the arrangement of monochromatic pieces. He almost wished to have a partner programmed, but at the same time he knew that he wouldn't be able to really replace what he lost. He even despised himself for considering that weakness, that lack of association, a loss.
He bit his lower lip between his teeth and set about putting the pieces away again. He was wasting himself if he remained in this room. He needed to do something. Finishing collecting the parts, he stored them back in their compartment and readied himself to head out into the corridors. Perhaps to the Library, or to the Gym. The mental being just as important as the physical, and in either case he couldn't allow himself to be lacking. Not with another Nietzschean on board, and one that he'd been forced into a damnably inferior position against.
The most he could do about that was deal with it with stoicism. Eventually he would prove himself superior, given enough time.
