Summary: Why Irisa hates towns
Irisa sat outside her room, her legs hanging over the edge of the room beneath hers. She had just finished her morning exercises and was eating what Nolan called a ‘new world apple’.
From where she sat she could see the bustling main street and it ruined her peaceful mood. So many people, too many people.
She got up and made her way towards the main street and headed into the mass of people.
Too many people bumping into each other, too many people trying to make you buy stuff you don’t want or need.
When she got to the law keepers office Nolan wasn’t there, but Tommy was.
“Where’s Nolan?” she asked
“Good morning to you too” he said with a little laugh and smile. Irisa did not return either. Tommy’s smile fell, he looked down a little deflated. “Er..I don’t know where he is, he came in said ‘hi’ and then left again..”
Irisa turned and walked out.
Too many people wanting something from you
She stood outside the office wondering where Nolan could be, there weren’t many places he liked or needed to be really, so she made her way to the Need/Want. It was pretty early in the day, but that never stopped Nolan before.
She looked around the bar but saw no sign of Nolan. “Is he here?” Irisa asked the barkeep simply
“Is who here?” the barkeep replied like he didn’t care, which of course he didn’t
“Nolan”
The barkeep shrugged his shoulders and walked away.
Irisa had the strongest urge to grab one of her blades, knock him down and hold it to the barkeeps furry neck and make him answer her question, but she knew Nolan would be angry with her if she did.
It didn’t help that she had a somewhat irrational hatred for that barkeep though, he insisted on putting fruit slices in her drinks no matter how many times she’d told him not to.
Too many irritating people she couldn’t get away from
She sat at a table with a direct view of the room Kenya used upstairs; she stared at the door for what must have been twenty minutes, glancing around her surroundings every so often.
When the door finally opened and Kenya walked out Irisa stood and started moving towards the stairs to meet up with Nolan. But she stopped when she saw not Nolan but Stahma follow Kenya out. They stood outside the door and talked.
Irisa noticed how closely they stood to each other and watched as Kenya raised her hand to place it on Stahma’s waist, but Stahma took the hand to stop it and took a step back away from Kenya. Stahma then looked around to see that no one was watching them.
When she saw Irisa her eyes narrowed and she walked quickly away from Kenya and towards to stairs.
Irisa rolled her eyes and started walking out, now that she knew Nolan wasn’t there she had to look elsewhere. When she reached where the stairs were a hand grabbed her arm, she instantly tensed and placed her other hand on one of her blades.
“Irisa…” Stahma started in her slow soft voice. She paused when irisa looked at the hand on her arm, she didn’t particularly like being touched by people she didn’t like or people she knew didn’t like her. Stahma’s eyes followed irisa’s, when she realised what she had done she quickly removed her hand and subtly wiped it slightly on her flowing dress. Under normal circumstances she would never have willingly touched an irathient.
Irisa said nothing.
“…I have just been speaking with Kenya about my son’s upcoming wedding……” Stahma lied smiling unconvincingly
Irisa still said nothing.
“…I hope you can understand that these things … these arrangements can be….. sensitive and perhaps best not discussed with others…..”
Still nothing, not even an acknowledgement she had heard anything that was said, just a slightly irritated look. She then glanced at Kenya, who was standing a few steps up the stairs watching the exchange, then back to Stahma. She then silently turned away and walked out of the Need/Want.
Too many people with their little secrets. Too many people with things to hide
She shielded her eyes from the brightness outside and made her way towards the mayor’s office in hopes of finding Nolan there.
As she walked through the main street again she noticed the looks some people gave her, the way some of the stall holders turned their backs as she walked past and the whispering as she passed. She had become pretty used to it after being in Defiance for the last four months. She ignored it as best she could.
Too many people who judge everyone else
Before she reached the office her attention was grabbed
“Hey kiddo” Nolan said from behind her. She turned towards him as he put his arm around her shoulder.
She hugged him back “hey”
“Where’ve you been? You weren’t at the lawkeepers office” Nolan asked
Irisa looked at him “I’ve been looking for you all morning”
“And I’ve been looking for you, looks like we kept missing each other” Nolan smiled “Looks like we're both idiots” he laughed squeezing her shoulder. “Come on, I’ll buy you lunch”
Too many people who didn’t treat her like Nolan did.
That is why she hated towns
