7:15pm, July 1975
The library doors opened, and people reluctantly meandered out into the unseasonably warm summer night, past the signs touting that evening’s showing of old movies.
“Let’s get some ice cream, my treat!” a young girl with long red hair and bright green eyes told her companion, a tall lanky youth with long, stringy black hair, interrupting the tune he was humming.
“I can afford to pay!” he complained. “I’ve saved up money from tutoring, and…uh...making things for people…”
Lily stopped and glared at him.
“I don’t think I want to know about that!” she huffed, turning and stalking away. Severus wondered if this meant they weren’t going to get any ice cream.
He ran to catch up with her.
“That woman in the movie reminded me of you,” he offered. Lily gave him a skeptical side-ways glance, but Severus noticed that they were heading in the direction of the ice cream shop.
“You would do that,” Severus continued. “You would insist on going back to rescue people you don’t even know, even if it meant your own boat might sink…”
“And you wouldn’t, Severus Snape?” Lily demanded, stopping abruptly. Severus thought quickly.
“I would go back for you, Lily, no matter what. I would give up my own life if it would mean saving yours…”
He could not fathom the look that flickered behind her eyes, or the sad smile she bestowed on him. But she took his hand as they continued to the ice cream shop, and Severus sang the tune from the movie to himself.
