Koda & Maya

Moving out

Maya had been thinking about it all day. All week. He had to tell Kumi that he couldn’t keep living with her anymore. He was constantly scared he’d get her in trouble and she needed to focus on school instead of worrying about him all the time. He had taken a deep breath, thought it over hundreds of times in his head and now he felt he was ready.
”Kumi-chan,” he called weakly as he walked over to her. “Can I talk to you about something?”
The small brunette girl took a long moment finally look up, letting skin darkened by lack of sleep stretch into a weary smile.
“What is it Maya?”
Kumi hadn’t been around a lot, at least mentally, too buried into books trying desperately to prepare for finals, using the text as an excuse to run from fears that were suddenly starting to pop up.
“I was wondering if you’d be okay with me leaving...” he said slowly as he watched her face for a reaction. He was waiting for anger, sorrow, tears; something that he knew would make him feel guilty. He began to look away now afraid to make eye contact with the girl.
“I don’t want to distract you from your school work with me being here. I’ve spoken to a friend and I’ll be staying with them so I’ll be okay.”
The smile fell away and Kumi slowly turned her attention back to lines of words, vision focused intently on the paragraphs in an effort to keep the tears at bay.
True they didn’t get all that much time together, but Kumi couldn’t lie and say she hadn’t enjoyed falling asleep wrapped up tight in Maya’s arms.
“O-okay…” How could she even think it was her place to stop him?
Maya could tell his girlfriend wanted to cry and he wanted to cry too. He loved being around the girl but he needed some space to think every thing through on what he was going to do now. He didn’t have a permanent place to stay and now he was a high school drop out.
He went over to the girl and gently wrapped his arms around her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “I…I love you Kumi.”
The brunette’s own hands came up to hook in Maya’s arms, her face burying down in the skin to hide the tears that had started to leak out.
Maya had never said those words to her, no matter how much she had secretly yearned for them. “I-I love you too, Maya…” And she always would.
A deep breath, worried eyes flicking up, and Kumi could only smile shyly. “You’ll still be my boyfriend, right?”
He hugged her tighter and rested his head on her shoulder. He was so glad to hear that she loved him too. He would stay with her forever and a day. She meant so much to him and it hurt him that he had to leave.
”I will be your boyfriend forever Kumi.”
At that, Kumi couldn’t help but laugh, lifting her head just enough to smile genuinely at her forever boyfriend.
“Only my boyfriend?” The words were teasing, but she couldn’t deny that she hoped somewhere deep down.
The blonde’s cheeks turned bright red at the thought and smiled back at her. He looked away for a second before looking back at the girl.
”I uhh..probably not…” He couldn’t think that far into the future right now. He could only constantly think in the here and now and nothing else. He would like to grow old with Kumi as husband and wife but they’d have to wait to see.
A small flicker of a smile across the brunette’s features before it was fading away into a more serious expression. She didn’t exactly like the idea… But there really wasn’t much she could do.
“Do you want help packing?”
“There isn’t much to pack but you can,” he responded. He had already packed most of it but he could always run and up pack so that it looked like he wasn’t ready to leave already. He was glad he didn’t have that much stuff with him or he would have a hard time hiding it at Jusco.
After a moment, Kumi nodded, clutching at Maya’s hands before finally standing. “After we finish packing… Let’s go out to eat, my treat, okay?”
She wanted more time with Maya, just a little bit more, because she didn’t know when she’d be able to see him again.
“Okay. I’d like that.” He gave a small smile, returning the grasp Kumi had on his hands. Once he had the money he would have Kumi live with him once he bought an apartment. He gave a small sigh wishing it would happen sooner than later.
