Season 2 Rewatch - 2x05 "DOA"

Oct 07, 2013 10:00

Only 7 weeks until new episodes! November 25th is so close I can almost taste it!

This week we're discussing/reminiscing about episode 2x05, "DOA."

This episode started out with a bit of an (awkward) bang when Sharon's somewhat-but-not-quite-ex-husband shows up in the middle of the night to announce that he's staying over for a bit.

We get to see Sharon in total Mamma Bear, BAMFy mode when she has Rusty stay behind in her bedroom (which we finally see for the first time!) while she investigates with her gun. Having grown up myself in a city where the average person does not carry or own a firearm, I was struck by the fact that she obviously kept/keeps the gun in her room with her. Is this something that is common among officers or ordinary firearm-owning citizens? And how awesome was she when she kicked that fridge close?

And of course, Rusty comes rushing out with a rather comical weapon (Sharon's lamp) to protect his Mamma Bear. Seriously, I adore how much Rusty has come to obviously care for Sharon. Yes, he has his moments where he is abrupt with her, but he was willing to put his life on the line here to protect her against their unknown intruder. If that isn't mother and son love, then I don't know what is!

Jackson is granted a few days on the couch by an annoyed Sharon and Rusty is instructed to go back to bed. The next day Jackson shows up at the Major Crimes department and "charms" Sharon's fellow officers with jokes and the like while Sharon tries to carry on juggling Rusty, Jackson, and solving a murder. Already Rusty appears to be interested in getting to know Jackson, and Sharon warns Rusty against getting too close to him.

Rusty takes the opportunity to question Sharon about the rather unorthodox state of her marriage/non-marriage to Jackson, to which she gives a vague-ish answer. What did you think about Rusty questioning Sharon about her personal life? And about her response to him? Did the scene sit okay with you? Or were you left wanting more/something a bit different?

Rusty decides to go against Sharon's advice and he gets quite chummy with Jackson. They spend an evening playing cards and Jackson manipulates Rusty into wearing a pair of highly reflective sunglasses so that Jackson can see which cards Rusty is holding in his hands. Sharon sees the trick almost as soon as she comes home for the evening and calls Jackson out on his stunt. What did you think of this scene? Given Rusty's reluctance to trust adults (especially male adults) in the past, did his "fast friendship" with Jackson seem OOC to you? Why or why not?

Random: I want to take a moment to openly declare my love of Provenza and his Grumpy Grandpa attire. I have nothing else here, I just wanted an excuse to post this screencap:

Jackson's days-long visit has come to an end, but he puts on the "feel sorry for me" act and it seems to work on Sharon. She gives him an ultimatum: he can stay with her until he finds a suitable apartment ONLY if he calls their children. We learn that he has had a poor relationship with both their grown daughter and son (who we learn is named Richard, or "Ricky") for several years. This revelation seems to catch Rusty off guard a bit. Why is that do you think? Do you think that Rusty believed that Jackson was really an okay guy and a decent father? Do you think that this scene triggered any memories of his interactions with Daniel from season one?

Sharon first dials the number to Ricky's cell, because he works a lot of hours and is often in bed early, before leaving Jackson and Rusty. We get to see the very beginning of Jackson's conversation with Ricky before the episode fades to black, how do you think the rest of the conversation went? Do you think Ricky was surprised to hear from Jackson after so long? What do you think Ricky does for a living that has him working so many hours?

What were your first impressions of Jackson, and of the Raydor/Raydor marriage/non-marriage in general?

Any other comments, frustrations, favourite moments, etc. from this episode? Let us know in the comments!
