Mitch and Rod Think and Write Stuff About Movies They've Seen - Signs

Aug 11, 2008 15:18

The idea is that Mitch and I watch a movie and then think and write stuff about it, without knowing what the other person is writing until after the fact. If you missed our first go-round, here are mine and Mitch's.

We are currently living in a cabin in the woods known as the Crow's Nest. Our bedroom not only has a view of the lake, it also has a TV and VCR complete with tape collection. After the other Hitchcock siblings and extras went to bed, Mitch and I decided it was movie time.

I have not watched a VHS in I have no idea how long (one of my favorite parts of watching the movie was enjoying how the audio gets warped because it is a tape, particularly the strings). Also, I haven't watched TV in my bedroom since highschool because I have never had a TV there since. We agreed to watch Signs because I lost rock-paper-scissors. I was hesitant to see it because I thought it was some kind of horror movie and I don't watch those.

I have had a billion opportunities to see Signs because I used to live with Laynie Sands. Well, I had a billion opportunities to see the end of it because Laynie used to put the DVD in and watch the end of the movie all the time (because she is the cutest ever). The whole time I was watching it, I kept wondering "is this where she started watching?" My guess is during the last-meal scene?

Instead of being a horror movie like I feared, it is totally a hilarious family movie with occasional tense moments. They might have freaked me out more if I weren't so sleepy and warm while watching it. I found most of the movie very funny because of the characters' complete earnestness. Also, let's be honest, I'm a total sucker for wacky, precocious kids, especially when they have intense sibling love. I couldn't deal with how much the little boy looked so much like a Culkin child. When he was being particularly pouty or serious faced, I kept shouting out, "CULKIN!"

The ending confused me, which I guess is not uncommon in M. Night features but I think I got confused for the wrong reasons. Maybe it is because I am a nerd, but I kept thinking the moral of the movie was going to be that the aliens weren't here to attack us. So when the brother started wailing on the (very man-shaped) space dude, I figured it was something he was suppose to regret in a few mintues when they realized the gas in the kid's face had cured his asthma. None of those things were true. The movie was pretty stark in terms of good and bad. It divided people into those of hope and those of fear and buried any unhappiness under the platitude of everything happens for a reason.

In keeping with the movies habit of black and white here are things I liked and things I didn't like.

Yes!
  • I loved the sheriff character. She was particularly adept at the earnest comedy without making fun of her own character. Also, her dialect (and dialogue) was very charming.
  • When Mel Gibson runs around the house and yells, "Ahhh! I'm insane with anger"
  • Whether or not you think the water thing is stupid, I think the glasses all over the house was good prop work and I dug it.

No!
  • What was the deal with when they came out of the basement and there were moons and stars carved into the window boards? Seriously, whuhhhuh?
  • I only needed to hear Mel's speech about "two kinds of people" once, there was no need to flashback and remind me by replaying it.
  • I just can't philosophically get behind everything happens for a reason. I just can't.

Those are my thoughts. Join us next time for TBD.
