For years, the time bookended by Thanksgiving and 12/25 has been known as "the Christmas season." Oh sure, some have thrown in the all inclusive "happy holidays" but as a kid, I thought meant Christmas and New Years in a nifty combination. Not so- I learned- other people celebrate other things- with different meanings and they have nothing to do with Christ being born. OK- I could accept that- why?- because I'm a well rounded individual willing to accept what others believe in order to understand and appreciate the differences OUR CULTURE (America) has to offer.
YOU may call me a hippy- Bill O'Riley will call me a crazy, moonbeam dancing ,wheat grass eating, off kilter, should be locked up in a mental institution LIBERAL. Yikes is right my friend.
Anyways- so Christmas isn't celebrated by everyone. Not everyone "gets" the Christmas tree- or Nat King Cole singing "Oh Tanenbaum" (actually I don't get it either- he was black and sooo NOT German). And this year- some one said- "HEY! this is not fair! We DON'T celebrate Christmas! We celebrate Hanukkah (spelling?) and some other dude's like. "Yo! I celebrate Kwanzaa!" So handling this like America does we Incorporated it into our media and everyone was barking back in forth- Fox news dubbed it "The War on Christmas" (of course it's a war). Conservative Christians are freaking out- they can't say Merry Christmas in public anymore- Oh little Town in Bethlehem... no more of that either. This is a very PC world we live in DAMIT and those sugar cookies you're have there shaped like angels are DEEPLY offensive.
Bottom line is- I'm for an all inclusive holiday. Yes- we Christians tend to take over like a gay designer- but really- it doesn't bother me because that's how I was raised. Christian- Christmas is the holiday that I've celebrated forever. But here's the thing- I'll never truly understand what it's like to be a minority. So all inclusive holiday it is.
However- I don' think this is Christmas' major problem. The actual problem is this- we've lost track of the universal meaning of togetherness. Family- friends...coming together to celebrate one another. Whether you're Jewish, Christian...or whatever- we all come together to enjoy one another. We can have our own beliefs in our hearts but universally we have each other and I truly believe the holidays should be about that. Not about the Gap or Wal-Mart's low prices or anything like that.
So what I'm trying to say is- have a wonderful holiday. Enjoy it.
