So, a couple of weeks ago I got an e-mail from
mariamist recommending I apply for a couple of jobs at Disney. Both positions were in the "customer service" area for their online games. While not necessarily the type of position I was dreaming of, it is work I know I can do well, and enjoy, so I passed my resumes in and promptly forgot about it (I've probably applied for 200+ jobs in the past two months, I've stopped keeping my hopes up).
Then last week a got a call from someone in the HR department at Disney who wanted to talk to me about my application. This is not the first call I'd had from Disney regarding a job, so I didn't really get excited until she told me about the details of the postion. It was providing customer service to kids who play the MMO's (Massive Multi-Player Online games) designed for players 8-14 years of age. This is one of my favorite age groups, and MMOs are the most interesting type of game to work on, in my opinion. Then she asked me to come in for an interview, and I decided it was okay to get my hopes up a little.
So, last Wednesday I had my interview. It started off with the woman from HR who I had spoken with on the phone. Apparently the phone interview had gone better than I realized, because she actually remembered the conversation, and was very excited about meeting me. After reviewing my resume and experience more, she had decided that, if I was interested, she was going to recommend me for a slightly different job, Technical Support for the same games for which we had discussed me providing customer support. Aw, gosh, having to work with kids and computers, how ever will I survive (can you feel the sarcasm? :) So I told her that I was definitely interested in that position, and she had me talk to a couple of other people who are fairly highly ranked within the group I'd be working in. We discussed my experience with MMO's generally, and Disney's games specifically, which was great, because I've played most of the major MMO's, and I've tried Disney's games a fair amount. I asked a good number of questions about the position and the department, but it was difficult for them to answer because it turns out that I would be one of the first hires into a new customer service department, of which technical support will be a part, so they don't know all the details quite yet. I know that technical support is likely to have about 20 people in it to start, which is freakin' awesome, because it would mean that I would have peers to work with and talk to, which I haven't really had in years and years, so just that alone was really exciting. The position comes with great benefits, which is also amazing and great. At the end of the conversation with the two people from within the department, they went out and the woman from HR came back in. I was a little nervous because I felt that things had gone well, but I can never really tell, and I didn't know how long it was going to take them to make their hiring decisions. Then she offered me to job right then and there! I was/am SO exciting. I barely even made an effort to hide it.
Now, the minor down side to this amazing opportunity:
The first two weeks of the job are intense training, because there is a lot they need their customer support representatives to know before they let them talk to customers. Because of this the don't allow people to take off any time from the first two weeks. And the job starts Feb. 9. Yes, for those of you doing the math, that means I will not be going to Estrella War XXV. But, again, on the up side, I will have a job, so I'll be able to do more stuff, and I don't be some unbelievably depressed and stressed all the time.
I will post more about the job as I start to learn about it. Thank you all for your love and support!
