I'm not sure how much I care but I wanted to express what I saw on my way back from dropping off a money order at my townhouse complex manager's office.
I looked around the neighbourhood and much to my rather hypocritical disappointment, each and every house I saw was bereft of a real jack-o'-lantern. Only two of the forty or so homes I saw had any kind of pumpkin facsimile decor. I was almost at my house when I noticed a sign taped onto the front door of the new neighbours unit.
(something like) "Sorry, we do not give out candies. Sorry. Ephesians 5:11"
I Googled the Bible verse and this is what I found:
Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them.
I don't understand how the giving of candy to children on the eve of a Catholic holy day is evil. I'm not painfully unaware of fanatical adherents to debased interpretations of the Bible but Hallowe'en in most of North America is about fun and candy and costumes. I just don't get it.
Or maybe it's a clever way to avoid scrutiny for not buying $20 worth of sweeties one would have to tediously dole out to the hundreds of children who live in my part of Greater Vancouver. Who's going to mention anything about religion and culture to the new religious neighbours from a different culture?
I guess this doesn't matter in the least.
