Okay, so here it comes... my report about the Thomas Godoj concert. It turned into a novel length report LOL so I cut it into several "chapters" and you can decided for yourselves which ones you want to read or just look at the pics or read all!
For those of you who don't remember: Thomas Godoj was the winner of this year's German Idol. He wasn't the one I was rooting for (Fady is my superstar *grin*) but that never meant I didn't like him. I thought he was good... just not as good as Fady. And different. Maybe the two of them shouldn't be compared at all since they have totally different styles and they're both great at what they do.
Anyway... when his concerts were announced this summer and the pre-sale started, I was in some kind of good mood and I had a 5 Euro voucher from the ticket website, so I just went ahead and bought one. I had no one to come with me but I thought either I find someone to come with me or meet me there or I'll enjoy myself alone anyway.
I asked a friend of mine who had rooted for Thomas during his German Idol time and she promised to listen to the CD and tell me then but kept postponing the decision and kept asking for more time, so I kinda figured she wouldn't want to come. I guess she just had a bad conscience but I told her it's okay. In any way I knew there was a good chance
starrox2 would be there and I very much looked forward to meeting my fellow Fuse mod, the crazy "Thomate".
Then in the week before the concert, some really bad news hit me and I felt more like crawling into bed, pull the cover over me and ignore the world around me but my twin told me to go to the concert anyway and enjoy myself. She said there is nothing you can do about it on a Friday night anyway, so go out, have fun and forget the world for some time... it'll all catch up with you soon enough.
I'm a good twin and listen to what my younger twin says, so I did. :D
Friday morning I had to run some errands and came home at noon to find an offline message from
starrox2. While chatting with her (she was actually online) I tried to figure out what I should bring in case I get the chance of an autograph from Thomas. I don't own his CD, so I looked for some nice Hi Res pictures online to print them out. When I looked at my printer, I saw my two Fady CDs and I asked
starrox2 if I should bring one of them and ask Thomas to sign it. LOL! We both agreed that we would love to see his face! It probably similar to the one of David Tennant that I posted the other day. LOL!
When I had finished printing, I got super tired, so I decided to take a short nap - yeah... me and "short" naps... always a bad idea. LOL! Took me ages to get ready, pack my bag and then a friend called, so it was a lot later till I drove off here than I had planned (but when am I ever on time??). I had my trusty iPod Shannon with me in the car to listen to Thomas' songs but for some reason, Shannon refused to play any of them (I had it on shuffle). She played lots of Fady songs instead. *giggles* Just before Nuremberg I had to change motorways and ended up on the right one but in the wrong direction. LOL! So I had to take the next exit, turn and go back. Then I missed the right exit to leave the motorway and had to go another 20 kms to get to the next exit and turn again. Finally I arrived at the zoo (the concert hall is right next to the zoo), found a parking spot and followed the stream of people (I didn't know exactly where the hall was, but I thought a lot of people walking into the same direction. That can't be wrong). Unfortunately the group I followed, stopped at the zoo entrance. Oups. I looked around, was pretty sure that the concert would not be inside the zoo *giggle* so I decided to "out" myself and just ask the group that I followed, especially since I had heard them talking about the concert. Strangely enough when I asked them, they pretended they don't know where the hall is. (uuumkay...) but then someone else told me it's all the way up the hill. So up I went and soon saw the HUGE queue in front of a building. It was then, that I tried to call
starrox2 but she didn't answer. The queue went rather fast and it was just around 7:40 when I was finally inside (concert was supposed to start at 8). The hall was rather small and round, small stage and the area right in front of it was packed. No way of sneaking up front (or for
starrox2 to sneak out to meet me, even if she had heard her phone) I walked around a bit, went upstairs (there was some kind of balcony thingy), then went downstairs to grab a slice of pizza and wash it down with a coke. Then it was 8 and I went back inside to find a nice spot. Found one rather in the back but since the hall was so small, it was still kinda close to the stage - close enough for me anyway, I was not squashed, I could see good enough (for my dwarf size), I was fine. :) While we all waited for the concert to start, there were some fangirls shouting "Thomas! Thomas!" and I felt such an urge to shout "Fady! Fady!" *snickers* I texted my twin and asked her if I should... or maybe shout "DELETE! DELETE!" (since I was wearing my Cybermen T-shirt).
When I had finished my text message, the band came on stage and started to play. The band and Thomas were really good, you could see how much they enjoyed being on stage and I do like Thomas' songs (his own songs and the cover songs he's singing). Maybe someone should have warned them about the Frankonian mentality tho. (Frankonia is the northern part of Bavaria where I live) Frankonians are a VERY laid back people. We don't get enthusiastic about anything very easily. It's not like the music starts playing and you have a hall full of Frankonians excited and dancing and clapping with the first tune. Nooooooo!! The absolute highest form of praise you will ever hear from a Frankonian is "bassd scho" (in German: "passt schon", in English: that's alright) Maybe Thomas expected more of a reaction from the audience or something happened before the concert or he was exhausted after so many concerts in a row or whatever it was, he seemed a bit irritated at first. And something he REALLY needs to stop doing is talk so much. After every song (really every song) he started talking, rambling on about something, sometimes a bit incoherent for several minutes until the audience started to shout "sing! sing! sing!" or the band started playing the next song to shut him up. The couple standing behind me (maybe in their 40ies or 50ies) said this behaviour is rather unprofessionally and I somewhat have to agree. I go to a concert to hear the music and see a good show, not have the singer ramble on about Christmas and present between 2 songs. Some talking is all right, sometimes they have to make changes on stage and if the singer uses the break to tell a little anecdote or so, that's fine. But not like that. And not after EVERY song. It was such a mood killer. As I said it might work with other audiences but it really takes a lot to get a Frankonian started and what you really don't want to do is stop them, you want to play 3, 4, 5 songs in a row to get them go wild (well, as wild as it gets with a Frankonian). It might also work with someone like John Barrowman, I assume, who sings more quiet songs and who can tell really funny and exciting stories in between. Who has just the charisma to capture his audience no matter what he does. But Thomas is a rock musician. I really can't see... I dunno... Bon Jovi playing one song (say: have a nice day), and then have Jon walking up and down the stage for 5 minutes mumbling some incoherent things and then play the next song (say: bad medicine).
But I did like the songs and the performance of the songs, I just think Thomas needs to work on the in-between stuff. But that's fine, he's only starting his career (at least I hope his career will continue to be successful). I really wish him all the best. :)
After the concert, I decided to hang around a bit in the hope to spot
starrox2 . I had only seen one picture of her so far (I think?), so I had only a vague idea what she looks like but I hoped she'd recognize me or call my cell phone. I looked around and spotted a girl that I thought could be here and that looked around as well, looked at me and then looked away, so I thought, nah, probably not her. I still watched her, trying to decide whether to call
starrox2 's cell phone or just ask the girl, when I saw the girl taking out her cell phone and dial a number. I put my hand in my pocket and oh surprise, there was my cell phone vibrating. Took it out and yes it was
starrox2 , so I looked at the girl with the cell phone, grinned and waved my cell at her. She saw me and we both laughed and hugged.
She introduced me to a few other Thomas fans (among them
darlakane ) and just talked and talked and talked like a waterfall which was really nice and had me chuckling on the inside since
halfrek2 ,
garfeimao and
surreality_fan all had told me what a super nice but als super quiet girl
starrox2 is. Yes, talking in your own language can make all the difference. *teehee* We waited in front of the stage in hopes for autographs until security came and kicked us out. Then we waited in the front room until one of the band members (ugh... forgot his name) came out, signed a few things and then went back inside. Then we were told by a security guy that that was all, no more autographs for tonight.
starrox2 was all like WTF?? Thomas usually comes out (just once he hasn't because he was really ill that night) and even if he doesn't the rest of the band does. I told her it's all just my fault. I mean, by the sound of it, David Tennant always did the stage door thing during the Stratford run, just not the 3 nights I was there. Bad kharma surrounds me. Or something. LOL! VIPs see me and just RUN for their lives. LOL! And I'm such a well behaved fangirl. *pouts* Ah well... I wasn't too heartbroken. I mean, yes, meeting Thomas and having a pic with him and an autograph would have been cool but if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. Meeting David Tennant would have been way cooler and I survived it not happening, so yeah *shrugs* whatever. It was cool hanging around with
starrox2 and the other "Thomaten" who were all really nice as well, even after I told them I'm a Fady fan. (For a while there were some kind of fan wars going on between Fady and Thomas fans which was really sad because Thomas and Fady seemed to be going on just fine) I told them at one point during the concert, I felt a bit awkward when Thomas thanked his fans for voting for him during German Idol and I was like "lalala I didn't" Well I didn't vote AGAINST him either... I didn't vote at all. Waste of money. ;) I rather spent it on a pile of Fady CDs and the concert tickets. *grin* They said as long as I didn't vote against Thomas, that's alright then. I also told them the story about the Fady CD that I wanted Thomas to sign (but that I didn't bring) and they laughed about it as well and agreed that it would have been a laugh to see Thomas' reaction. After a while we went outside and stood around a bit more and that was when a few band members went past us to get their stuff into the tour bus. No one bothered them, just one of the girls in our group waved and said hi to them and they waved back. Probably because they spotted a few familiar faces in the crowd (maybe 20-30 people were still around, some of them the "hardcore fans" who went to almost every concert), they came back to talk to the fans and also gave autographs and posed for pictures. I had Daniel and Sebastian sign one of my Thomas pictures, had Tina take pics of us and then we just stood there and talked to them for a while. Then Daniel said it's getting too cold, he should go inside but - whatever made him do it LOL - he suddenly turned and gave one of the fangirls a big hug. Then I was like "Oh come here, you'll get a hug too... and you... and you" and gave all the girls in our group a hug. LOL! That was so cute! Especially since Daniel is the shy one. who doesn't feel comfortable with all the attention and is being mocked about it by the other band members. LOL! I got a hug as well and it felt really nice. *grin* Despite his announcement, that he REALLY needs to go inside now, he only walked over to another band member (Tom?) and stayed there. We were really starting to be cold, so we decided to walk back to our cars. The other girls had hotels in Nuremberg, so
starrox2 gave them a lift, I followed them and we met up again at McDonalds at the main train station.
starrox2 had her laptop and so we ate and looked at the pics and videos from the concert. It was so funny and cute to see the other girls swoon and squee over the pics knowing I would be exactly the same if this was David or Gareth or Ian. *teehee* It was getting later and later but I think especially
starrox2 could have gone on forever, she was so excited and pumped up with adrenaline. *giggles* I think it was about 2:30 when we said good-bye. Hopefully, I'll meet them again, especially
starrox2 but we have more than 1 fandom in common, so I think there's a good chance. ;)
I was rather impressed by me, that I immediately found the right way outside the city and onto the right motorway. The streets around the concert hall had been a bit icy but the motorway was free of ice, so there was no problem. Halfway home, it started to drizzle a little, then the rain turned into sleet and then snow. Gah! The surface of the street was still fine but the sight just sucked and I was getting tired and had problems keeping my eyes open anyway. I blame my tiredness for taking the wrong exit off the motorway just before I got home (the motor way is also kinda new, so I'm not that familiar with it yet), so I had to take another detour to get home. In the end, it was 4:30 till I got home and I was exhausted and went straight to bed. Almost slept the rest of the weekend. LOL!
I had a great time and I'm really happy that I went to the concert. Thank you twin for convincing me to go! *huggles twin*
