Capoeira é bom para mim, a capoeira é bom para você!

I'm moving on up in the capoeira world!

I've been practicing capoeira since September 2011, and it has been a blast. But only semi-recently have I been getting more dedicated to it and practicing hard to become good at it.
So early this month, I obtained my capoeira uniform (after eight months of not having one... bad me!). White pants and white shirt, both with the Capoeira Malês logo emblazoned on it. There are pictures of me with the uniform one on Facebook. I was so, SO excited to get the uniform. The only thing my outfit's missing now is a belt! Can't wait to see which degree belt I get at the upcoming batizado in October!!

(A batizado ("baptism" in Portuguese), by the way, is an annual school-wide capoeira event to introduce and initiate new capoeiristas to the martial art, and for the experienced to work their way up the belt hierarchy, and for everyone to participate in workshops and train with instrutors, professors, contramestres and mestres from around the nation.)

And now, as of tonight, I have a capoeira name! It seems that I have established myself well enough at the school for the professor to come up with a name for me. I will now be known to the capoeira world as Coruja! And what makes me similar to an owl (which is the English translation of "coruja")? Uhh I don't know, and my professor won't tell me, ha.

So I may not fully understand why I have my name, but I have to admit that "coruja" sounds pretty kick-ass. I am a happy Cortney... er, Coruja.
