Finally, all the rest had been returned. One by one, each of the other six had been taken away, performed upon, and then returned to the cages, each in their own turn. In utter cold, uncaring silence, the creatures had returned the last of the first six, and departed again. But hours passed-- and they came back once more. For the seventh and final patient.
Wordlessly, they stepped up to the cage that housed Nahollo, the blank lenses where their eyes may have been seeming to regard him coldly. They unlocked the door, and two of them stepped inside, watching him and waiting.
