Things hadn't been all too bad with Itachi and Shisui. It was even sort of fun, sometimes, even though the pink of the Princess Bedroom was still bright enough to make his lip curl with all the disgust a seven-year-old could muster. He had been exploring the now-darkened house with Shisui, excited and eager to go on what he was taking to be a real scouting mission.

That was, of course, until they'd found that boy.

Something had been wrong with his legs, his face. And he'd moved so fast, crawling towards them with a tiny, gaping mouth and making horrible sounds that set Sasuke's hair on end. He hadn't even had time to think--he simply froze, and then ran as fast as he could ( ... )

Mikoto managed to not bring her dish down on top of her youngest son's head, surprised to find him here. He was supposed to be at the Academy -- just what had happened?

"Sasuke?" Not that her legs weren't smarting from the unexpected reintroduction to him, but concern over her child who was running in such blind panic as to be barreling head-first into his mother's knees (or any strangers, he hadn't expected it to be hers) had her even further on alter. She pitched her voice reassuring and steady, frowning as she looked back the way he had come. "It's all right, you're okay. What's scared you so badly?"

Her hand fell to his head, a gentle pressure to keep him close. Everything was looking increasingly dire, if she admitted (privately, lips thinning as she tensed and then told herself to relax, for Sasuke's sake) she still didn't have enough information to know how dire dire really was.

"T-There was a b-boy and h-he and S-S-Shisui and--" He broke down into sobs again, though struggled to control himself. He had to be brave--he had to show her that he was a ninja, one that could be trusted and relied on. Wiping his face, he stumbled to his feet, latching onto the hand upon his head even as he looked up at her.

"There are monsters. Nii-san and Shisui-kun are here. Shisui-kun and I--" He broke off for a moment, guilt written all over his face as he temporarily stared down at his bare feet. "...Shisui-kun and I got attacked. ...I ran away." Like a coward.

That was why he was tugging a little insistently at his mother's hand, now. "I have to go back for him! I have to make sure he's okay!"

Once he had realized that the Jutsus wouldn't do much to the ghost he had turned to follow Sasuke, more worried that the boy had gotten out of view and might be hurt than he was for his own safety.

Itachi would kill him if something happened to the kid.

"Sasuke!" He came around the corner fast, nearly Shunshin, skidding to the stop as he automatically reached for the child. It took him a moment to realize realized just who it was holding him. His brain froze, hand still half extended to take the child.

Itachi killed you.

Notyetnotyetnotyet. It's over and done for Itachi but it's not done yet.

His single eye spun, body frozen as he tried to process what her presence meant for his plans. He swallowed several times before he managed to speak, body folding in a bow. "Mikoto-sama. I apologize, I did not realize it was you. Sasuke-kun slipped away from me for a moment and I was attempting to assure his safety."

"Shisui-kun?" None of this made sense. Or more to a point, what Sasuke was saying didn't make sense. Monsters, a boy, and a dead cousin didn't add up to a whole lot. If Sasuke were lamenting his inability to be around when Shisui had... well, that was another issue.

Yet he spoke in present tense.

Brow furrowing, Mikoto regarded the direction her youngest shin-knocker had come from with intense suspicion. If something really was there...

Her dish flew through the air at Shisui's torso with what might have been deadly accuracy if its edge had been sharpened to a point. Seeing dead people was more of a nighttime dream activity and reflection over tombstones than an actuality in Mikoto's experience. She liked to think it was fairly extensive experience, if she was open to always learning more. Fire knew the kids were always teaching her something or another, if "how to flood things when there's no faucet in the area" still confounded her. Just a little. At the same time, she moved to pull Sasuke to her side, placing herself ( ... )
