Activision are the owners of Guitar Hero.
Harmonix created Guitar Hero.
Now;
After Harmonix made Guitar Hero II: Rock the 80's, they left Activision and started making Rock Band along with MTV and stuff, and EA published it.
Activision, without Harmonix to make Guitar Hero anymore, but still owning the name, set to work on Guitar Hero 3.
The point of the boycott:
On the Playstation 3, the Guitar Hero Guitar Controller is not compatible with Rock Band. With Rock Band being 4 players (Vocals, Lead Guitar, Drums, and Bass Guitar), the bundle that you buy only comes with the game, microphone, guitar, and drum kit. (no extra guitar for bass) Stand-alone controllers for Rock Band won't be available until around Feb. and even then, most like the Guitar Hero Les Paul more then the Rock Band guitar. Everybody thought it would work, but there turned out to be a problem.
So, as soon as the problem was found, Harmonix set out to fix it, creating a downloadable patch that will allow the Guitar Hero Les Paul to work with Rock Band. They submitted it to Sony for approval and release. Activision decided to block the release of the patch (which was supposed to come out on December 4th) and require licensing compensation from Harmonix for use of the guitar.
The fact that the consumers have bought the guitar in the first place should be the compensation, plain and simple.
If you agree that Activision should be tought a lesson from the consumers the say they who's happiness matters to them the most, please click on the link and add yourself to the boycott.
Thanks!
