I finally got my camera working which means...

Proof I've been sewing!

First off...

The stays are cut and assembled and here I've drawn out the boning channels in pencil.

A slightly blurry picture of my hand-sewn eyelets.

Is completed done!

It's 100% linen and all the seams are machine sewn the flat-felled by hand. All visible stitching is by hand. The drawstring is a piece of bias tape folded in half and sewn down.

Here's a pic of the gusset with flat-felled seams, as I'm very proud of them. :-D

As you may recall in an earlier post, I bought one of those cheap visors with gigantic brims at the drug store, with the plan of turning it into a regency bonnet.

Well, I hit the stash and found a black/gold synthetic taffeta that I apparently bought before I had any taste in fabric, but it's not so bad for just a hat.

So, here it is, step by step.

1. I removed the brim from the headband. I also decided that the brim was too big and I wanted it a bit shallower. I traced the outline of the brim onto a piece of card, and then cut it down until I like the shape, then placed that over the brim, traced the shape, and cut it out.

2. Next I traced the outline of the brim onto my fabric, cut it with seam allowance, and sewed both layers together.

3.I then trimmed the extra with pinking shears, turned in inside out, and ironed it. Then all I had to do was slide the brim between the layers and pin it shut.

4. Next I hand-sewed the excess fabric by the brim.

5. Next I cut a circle of fabric and lining and gathered it into a poof. A made a head-band that fit comfortably around my head and sewed the poof to it. Then I hand-sewed the headband to the brim.

6. Because of the dark colour of the hat, I think I want white trim. Here I pinned a piece of twill tape to the brim to get the idea. I also pinned a piece of lace on to see if that would looke alright.

A crappy mirror shot of me in the bonnet. I still haven't figured to turn off the flash on my camera yet, so these don't really work very well.

So next step it to cover the seams inside and trim it. I'm thinking of using the lace and some cream-coloured stain ribbon.

underthings, new linen shift, gold regency bonnet, 18thc stays
