Jo Walton's Farthing is this week's free Tor.com e-book and it is FANTASTIC. I just stayed up to finish reading it and purchased the sequel on Amazon. I've even pre-ordered the third book.
It's a manor house-style murder mystery involving a daughter of the aristocracy, her Jewish husband, and a Scotland Yard Inspector, set in a post-World War II alternate England that gave Europe over to Hitler, in exchange for English freedom. Nothing is what you think it is and the story is fantastic. After a Dorothy Sayer-esque beginning, it combines alternate history, murder mysteries, politics, fascism, consipiracies, the Holocaust, and human suffering all into an excellent read that was almost tailor-made for me.
Seriously, if any of that sounded interesting, you should read it.
