Elaine steps quietly into David's room, which is dim and quiet. There are toys all over the floor and the little boy is sleeping.

She's missed him, and though she knows he got his wish, his one true wish for himself, it hurts because she's not sure how long he will stay now that he is fully human. She kneels by his bedside and watches him sleep for a while.

He's so beautiful, he looks like an angel. She strokes his hair back gently, and smiles. He needs a bath.

Elaine knows she has no right to ask him not to go and look for his mother, if that's what he wants. And maybe David is right, maybe she would welcome him with open arms, now.

And his mother is living. Elaine lost her chance at motherhood when she refused her first meal.

He deserved a chance to go to school and have siblings and be like other little boys.

Elaine leans over and kisses his forehead. "I love you, dear..."

And in her heart, she begins to let him go.
