Writing the War Zone

Dec 18, 2011 22:14

Before I got into Yugioh (again), I had a long, illustrious career in Gundam Wing fandom. A series about fighting a war when you're 15. The super-powered robots were also a part of that, but what I always got out of it was the sad reality of children getting caught in a war zone, and the politics surrounding warfare.

Not that the actual series wasn't on complete crack a lot of the time, and the fandom not full of vampire!AU fic (lol guilty pleasure). But you know me and my penchant for overthingking everything.

One author in Gundam Wing who stuck with me was tb_ll57. She took the premise, took the character archetypes and the basic sketches of their lives and... made them breathe. I remember reading a story of a colony-born man getting vertigo because "you can see all the way up when you look up at the sky".

It blew my mind. The thought of the sky giving somebody vertigo who grew up with a ceiling over their head their entire life. That is exactly the level of realistic overthinking I love. Her writing is often harsh and depressing. Her details sparse but potent. All of her stories stick with me. They make me think. They are emotional punches to the gut, and they're so real.

The most recent thing she wrote that struck me was this drabble.

I have a long way to go as a writer.
