A Smallville ficlet in honor of Halloween

The Transformation - 1999

Martha heard a loud clomping on the stairs and raised her eyes. The greeting that she'd meant to say froze in her throat. She didn't recognize this person, this thing, this monster coming down the stairs.

It was huge. It towered over her, a mass of muscle that made her feel small and weak. The hands and feet were gigantic. Dark hair sprouted over face, arms, and legs.

"Food!" The thing demanded in a voice that was low and rumbled like thunder.

Quickly she passed it the platter of pancakes she'd prepared and watched as the creature devoured them. The bacon went the same way. To try to fill the ravenous appetite, she pulled out the ham she'd planned for dinner and carved off several slices. Those, too, disappeared. Desperately, she shoved a loaf of freshly baked bread forward and the monster attacked it.

When Jonathan entered the room, Martha had never been so happy to see someone in her life.

Noticing Martha's wild-eyed expression, his brows furrowed in concern. "What's wrong?"

With a shaky finger, she pointed at the creature sitting at her breakfast table. "Look!"

Jonathan shrugged. "Puberty had to hit Clark at some point."
