Land of the Salaried

I love being salaried personnel. I love having a charge account at the restaurant. I love having a pension plan. It's so grown up.

Most of all I love my new job. I hit the ground running on Tuesday and haven't slowed down since. The Middle School (which is attached to the community center where I work) had Career Day on Wednesday and I got to schmooze it up with all of the corporate volunteers. Also got to sit on a Harley and get my picure taken. Too cool. Also was encourage to join Young Professionals of Milwaukee by said volunteers. Apparently it's a meat market disguised as career networking. I guess it would be good for making contacts?

Also got invited to join NonProfit Young Professionals Network and will be attending a luncheon as requested by my boss. You know you're in the big leagues when your boss is encouraging you to take off and join "career enhancing" programs. It's only my 3rd day and I'm so busy, which makes me happy. What a contrast to the Radisson. My third day there I could do the job blindfolded.

I guess I'm just excited and challenged to have so much responsibility off the bat. Two big events are coming up in the next 6 weeks and I've been taking point on some of the projects, which is super exciting. I'm happy. And though I never ever thought I would be in Milwaukee, I can see myself staying here and working my way up and getting educated at UWM or Marquette. The city has been accused of being business backwards, unfriendly to young professionals, and fraught with intellectual defection, but through YPM I think that could change. I think there's a chance for us young professionals to make a difference for the future and change those stereotypes. Perhaps I'll be one of those who affect that change?
