Writer's Block: Lights Out

Jul 11, 2009 12:48

5 years ago, I went to New Orleans to celebrate Holy Week & Easter with my grandparents. It was April, so the heat wasn't really that bad (It prob. felt that way to my 7th-grader self, though). However, on Saturday night before Easter, there was a huge thunderstorm that caused a power outage. We all had to get dressed for church on Sunday by candlelight and I ended up getting some candlewax on my hands.

However, in those moments we were getting ready to go to church, it felt like a true Easter Vigil. It was pitch black except for the dim light from the candles and there was a sense of urgency, of expectation. In the five years since that Easter, I've been part of a lot of moving Easter Vigil services. Yet, none could compare to those hours in the early morning by candlelight when we were all hurriedly dressing.
