CHARACTER
NAME: Kiritsugu Emiya
AGE: 29
FANDOM/MEDIUM: Fate/Zero - Light novel and anime
CANON PULL-POINT: After volume 4. A month after the fire.
ABILITIES: Kiritsugu is a very, very good marksman, and has the tactical proficiency to complement it. To properly express his abilities, it is necessary to mention his tools. This translates into me making obnoxious reference to my partiality to firearms.

Enjoy that.

Kiritsugu typically uses the Calico M950, a submachine gun quite hard to categorize. Its capabilities label it as an automatic weapon, but the size makes it more similar to a large handgun. The cylindrical magazine on the top is exclusive to the weapon, allowing it 50-100 bullets. This is the weapon he will use when he simply needs to shoot something at mid to long range, because being the pragmatic guy he is, Kiritsugu reasons it’s better to be able to shoot a whole load of ammo into a target in a pinch. He has an extremely expensive rifle, the Walther WA2000, which, while fragile, is extremely accurate, and has been customized with a variety of scopes for the detection of magic. Lastly, he has his Thompson Contender, his main weapon, which he normally fires .30-06 Springfield bullets with. However, as a coup d’ grace, he will usually insert a special bullet containing his origin of ‘severing’ and ‘binding’, which will not only permanently restrict a person from using magic circuits, but will actually cause them to kill him, in the most ideal of cases. The more prana the victim is using at the time, the more effective this gambit is.

He also has rapidly-diminishing magic, but to a very limited extent. He’s not able to actually use it offensively, as most magi. Abilities that do count among this category are the power to use suggestion on people without magical talent, improvement of vision, the ability to force himself to sleep (handier than you’d think) or stay awake, creation and destruction of boundary fields and an ability known as Innate Time Control. This last one is restricted to him, seeing as the Emiya house enhanced its crest with research in time magic. What it does is change Kiritsugu’s biology, speeding or slowing it down. This results in giving him better reflexes, speed, and change in heat temperature. Making it have double the effect will cause immense pain, and unless measures are taken, three or more times the effect will kill him due to blood pressure maladjustments.

Of course, these abilities are already weakened as they are. Kiritsugu comes from a point in his canon where he’s not strong enough to crack high-level boundary fields

CHARACTER PERSONALITY: First of all, it should be established that Kiritsugu’s raison d’être is to save people. Ever since he was a kid, he’s been trying to serve as a hero to everyone he meets. While he will be furious at anyone short of his family that brings up his past, it is undoubtedly his background which has led him to develop this philosophy.

Fate/Zero is far more cynical than Fate/Stay, and it shows with Kiritsugu. His desire (if not his willingness) to save people has not been diminished in the least, despite going through tragedy after tragedy. However, he has developed a very mathematical sense of justice. To put it simply, Kiritsugu will not hesitate to kill if it will lead to the salvation of others, as long as the maximum amount of lives is preserved. He’s very much willing to put civilians in danger for this reason. His countless actions, which could be branded as those of a terrorist, have earned him the moniker ‘Magus Killer’, as well as an infamous reputation among the magus community. To be fair, he will go an extra mile to ensure the safety of innocents if he’s capable of doing so, especially after the conclusion of F/Z. However, that’s only if the possibility of them not interfering in his plans is present. Still, despite being infected, he’s not the frail old man he’ll eventually become, and is still willing to take less-than-honorable tactics to achieve victory, if not as much as during his story.
Kiritsugu doesn’t factor anything into his plans but the probability of success for each of his actions. Things like pride and honor are completely alien to him. In what could be seen by most magi as an insult to them, he actually has taken to using technology, only using his magecraft as a tool, rather than basing his entire life around it, as most magi do.

Speaking of, he’s perhaps the best planner in the entire 4th War, and never, ever engages an enemy without an appropriate strategy. These can include tactics that some could call ‘underhanded’, such as using jedi truths on people, as well as completely ignoring any code of honor. He also happens to be a merciless interrogator, willing to blow off a suspect’s hand within seconds of starting questioning. It is shown that all of the aforementioned heartlessness, as well as his aversion to happiness, is an act Kiritsugu forces upon himself in order to chase his dream, one which has slowly started to break with the conclusion of the war.

It would not be inaccurate to say that Kiritsugu hates Heroic Spirits. He hates how they use glory and chivalry to justify and spark the flames of war, killing thousands for no real reason at all. When engaged in conversation with one, he will often ignore what they say, and simply treat them as if they were tools of war. He will not try to engage them in battle directly, though. He knows his limits.

Despite his extensive resume of badassery, Kiritsugu should not be interpreted as a brave man. While he’s able to weather any threats to himself, he will fall into complete despair if anyone he’s close to is put in danger. In fact, he’s not above showing emotion when he’s in front of certain people, and has actually wept on occasion. This personality trait, cowardice, could very well be the reason for Kiritsugu’s fighting style, which is based on killing the enemy before they know what has happened, keeping his distance, and not letting himself be seen.

However, his personality does a complete 180 when interacting with his family. His wife, Irisviel, is one of the only three persons he will be mostly honest to, and will actually go out of his way in the middle of a war to make her happy. This shift is even greater when he’s near Ilya, his daughter. In such cases, Kiritsugu will play, joke and laugh, completely leaving behind his typical self. Seriously, the guy’s just about the best father you could imagine. Sure, it’s not enough to put his family over his aspirations of saving the world, but still. He also gets along with Maiya, his pupil, better than with most people, even if he tries his best to see her as nothing more than another tool (a task at which he isn’t completely successful).

WORLD: Fate’s world: the Nasuverse, as it were, has already been explained.
OCCUPATION: I can’t in good conscience make him anything but a gunsmith. Kiritsugu will be able to work on most types of weaponry, but anything too delicate will trigger his Origin, so he won’t be overly competent.

SAMPLES
THIRD PERSON: The satisfying click of the M1851 Colt Navy is prompted by the cylinder opening. Slowly, Kiritsugu removes four bullets. At first, five had been inserted. The magus knew enough about firearms to know it was safe to leave one chamber empty, that it wouldn’t be accidentally fired by revolver’s unstable mechanisms. Seeing as only one bullet needed to be fired, the others didn’t have percussion caps that would have wasted his time in their removal.

“It works.” He told the customer, giving him back his 42 oz. firearm. Receiving his pay, it wasn’t a few minutes until Kiritsugu saw another face pass by.

In the past, the man known as Emiya Kiritsugu had learned to hunt. Not a decade after he was born, he was already prepared to take the life of another human being. It was necessary for his own survival, yes, but he would have gladly taken another path had he been born with the same mentality as other human beings.

Kiritsugu had had no such luck. Being obsessed with the salvation of others, he had willingly casted away his own happiness and done away with human morality, killing dozens, hundreds, thousands.

This was different, however. He no longer had to focus on taking human lives to save others. Hunting was a pastime he did indulge in from time to time, but no humans but him were involved, and in what proved to be a rarity before coming here, it was purely for his own benefit. Though he had taken to trying to learn to cook for his family when chefs weren’t around, even his average preparation of meals was too elegant for him, who preferred the taste of the battlefield after so much time.

Perhaps it could be said that he had been corrupted by decades of blood running through his hands. He didn’t even know how far the damages of the War’s culmination delved into his psyche. However, none of that mattered here. He had recovered most of what he had lost. He didn’t deserve it, but through having lost it once, he realized what his mistakes had been. There was no more Grail. No more need to cast away everything he loved. There was still suffering, yes, but he would have to settle for mundane means of helping people, that things wouldn’t end the way they once did.

Another customer enters the makeshift shop situated near the wagons. Wordlessly, without an expression that reflects his contentment at this new life, Kiritsugu nods, welcoming the continuation of the day.

FIRST PERSON: [Though this is the first time the comm welcomes the figure of a man seemingly in his thirties and in a suit, he does not seem terribly worried. Perhaps he already has had time to acquaint himself with his surroundings, or is simply accustomed to new types of technology and stressful situations.]

I would like the aid of a cartographer. Failing one, a nearby town would be helpful. From what I gather, we’re not permitted to stay in a town, so I would like to establish checkpoints to restock in, if only for myself.

[Though talking about very mundane matters, Kiritsugu’s tone does not leave the murderous professionalism he assumes when talking about anything serious.]

[He does not mention his name. Such a thing is not necessary at a time as crucial as this.]

I would also request a list of everyone’s occupation, so no crucial time is lost on emergencies. You may find me near the end of the wagon line. Thank you.
